I think Sophia is in labor ! Advice ??? My little girl ( Sophia Loren ) is day 60. Yesterday her temp dropped from 101 to 98.8 About 5 am this morning she started panting and was very restless. She has started nesting in her whelping box. She has also vomited one time. I believe she is in early labor. Any idea how long this stage should last ? What do i look for next ? This is our first litter. We are expecting 4 babies.

Each female is different so it is hard to tell. I would say anywhere from 3 to 8 hours. Some females start digging and nesting early in the labor and other don't start digging until the last couple of hours. They will poop several times also once the puppies start moving to the birth canal. Is she having contractions? The best thing to do is get in in a quiet place where she can relax and you can relax too. I always retire to the bedroom with my mommas when they go into labor and I throw a old comforter on the bed and we just lay there and watch tv. Once her contractions start getting hard then I move her to the whelping basket that I lay on the bed. Once hard contractions and pushing starts the first puppy should arrive within 1 hour. Best of luck to you. Please keep us posted.

Also, since she is vomiting, you should give her a little Nutri-cal if you have any on hand or a little karo syrup and water.

I had questions about this too before. I thought it was normal to let them pant for a long time and dig. However, I was wrong. I would say that if she doesn't start having contractions in 8 hours from the beginning then get to a vet. My dog never had a contraction and had to have a c-section because she had too many puppies.

she had her first girl at 2:15, and took a while to pass the placenta. Still no 2nd puppy yet. She has 4. I called the vets office and they said not to let her go more than 2 hours .. so if he hasnt had it by about 4:10 i will have to take her in

Congratulations on the first puppy. I have had moms go a couple of hours between pups with no problem. As long as she is not pushing hard she should be okay. Do you have nutri-cal to give her? I find that giving nutri-cal between puppies helps to start the labor contractions again.

I am glad things are going well so far. It is frustrating when they drag it out. How big is the little momma? The smaller ones and the first time whelpers seem to take longer. Are the pups very big?

The first puppy is 3 1/8 ounce, 2nd was 3 3/4 ounce. Sophie was about 7.5 pounds when she was inseminated. The first puppy is nursing really well ( already up to 4 ounces ! ) the 2nd one hasn't figured it out yet

He's a chunky one. One more to go. Hopefully it won't take long. Keep in mind though, sometimes x-rays are wrong and she could possible have more or less than 4 but hopefully the vet is right about 4 pups.
