HELP my friend has 2 blue puppies MY friend several weeks ago called and said that her yorkie had puppies. I thought Awww I will come see them when they get old enough. She said 2 of the puppies look a smokey color. I didnt think anything about that untill last night I got to see the puppies. OH My goodness. 2 of the puppies are as blue as blue can be. I asked her what was wrong wtih them. She said she has no idea... I was so worried all night. I got on line this morning to see if I could find out anything.. I just read the thread on the choc and blueyorkies someone had posted earlier. They said that this is a defect and that the puppies might not live very long, that the you should not try raising one.. What is she to do. Are they saying to put them to sleep.. The puppies are 6 weeks old and are playing and look really healthy. I just cant imagine putting a puppy to sleep because of what the future may or may not hold.. Please if anyone has any info on this let me know. I have 2 yorkies myself that I show. So I know this color is not right at all.... Maybe she can find a home for them???? Someone with alot if time... |
pups As a 30 plus year breeder/exhabitor, this is what I know.. Pups born blue are different then Chocolate born. I do not thinkt he Chocolates have the skin and health problems many, not all blues have. I had one chocolate and one blue some years back. I gave the chocolate to a friend..I charged $100 for the blue to cover my expensives. So far there are no problems, but the saddle (blue area) does not always grow coat. I have seen photo's of some blue's that have little or no body hair, only gold..others have a short coat that does not grow. There is a gene called "fatal blue" and the pups will die...but that is not the case with all blues. You will find unreputable breeders charging thousands for choc's and blue's..just because something is rare does not mean it is valuable or desirable. A breeder has to decide early on what type of breeder they want to be..the first step is an informed one..the Internet is a world of knowledge and forums. Best wishes |
pups Thank yo so much for the info. This is really a sad thing that has happened. The puppies have a full coat of hair now. But I guess we will never know what to expect for the future of the puppies... I will see if I can get some pictures of the puppies.. My heart goes out to them. :( |
Ahhhhhhhhhh............me I am an old softie...............for all animals. Experience is worth alot more then book knowledge...........but if I had a blue yorkie, a purple yorkie..lol.....etc......I would raise it..........thats me.........if the little baby is questionable keep it / sale it if it is healthy (with spay agreement) I had never heard of a blue yorkie! I just know that nothing is perfect. |
pups What can happen is the coat that is blue stays short or falls out and is replaced by a very short hair..like a Doxie, smooth and short. I see no need to put any dog down because the color is wrong. I remember years ago a member of our club had several grey pups in a litter..she did not repeat the litter..these pups were not heathy and died..but many will be just fine. My blue boy is 3 years old now and his family keep in touch. As to book knowledge over experince...they both go hand in hand..I would pick experince over book knowledge to a point. When we are dealing with peoples hearts and emotions..and breeders are for sure. We need to know all we can, read, talk to other breeders, go to shows whether you show or not, talk to vets etc...the reason being, when a pup is born with a problem many breeders do not recognize it and sell the pup..later the new owner goes through misery and heart break, not to count the $$$$$ to fix a problem...many pups die from lack of breeder knowledge..selling too soon, not recognizing something abnormal...the vet can give a liver shunt puppy a clean bill of health on a good day..not all LS pups are continiously sick. If the breeder does not tell the vet what they observe, many vets will not know by a simply well puppy check before the pup leaves...plus many breeders feel their pups are just fine and never see the vet before they leave...you only have to read a few forums to see the heartache an "unlearned" breeder can cause...best wishes |

I found this on the net for you...... Genetics Of The Yorkshire Terrier Blue Born & Red/Chocolate Born Puppies The Yorkshire Terrier is genetically a Black/Tan (B/T) dog that turns blue later in life. The blue color is created at another loci by the GG or Gg genes. Whenever you have a dog born one color that turns blue later in life, it is the GG or Gg genes that cause this to happen. Recently I received a call from someone asking about the blue born puppies. That was a real blast from the past. Hadn’t heard of anyone having blue born puppies in some years. When a dog is born blue it is different genes that effects that then the GG genes. The dd gene is what causes this at birth and the Yorkshire Terrier should only be carrying the DD. A blue born puppy will also have self colored pigment, such as blue nose. The DD gene is what allows them to be born Black/Tan. The upper case always means dominant and the lower case always means recessive. This is obviously a deep buried recessive that the animals are carrying that they have passed onto the resulting puppies. The breeds that are born blue are born with the dd gene, but in Yorkshire Terriers this should not be the situation to cause the blue coloring. Unfortunately with blue born puppies the situation is usually fatal. Very few live beyond the 1st few days. The ones that do survive almost always at the time they would normally break blue, lose all their blue body coat and get a very leathery skin that is like an elephant hide and causes the dog to be in extreme pain. At that time the dog has to be humanely put down. I have heard of a couple that have lived a normal life, but I think there are very few that do. Do not be tempted to raise one of these as you are opening yourself to heartbreak, let alone what the dog will go through later in life. |
pups I have read that article also. It is not always true they will die or have health problems..BUT I would not want to let one go to an unsuspecting pet lover without them knowing there could be serious problems. Some people will willing take on a potential health problem and do what is necessary for the welfare of the pet. I see no need to put a pup down until there is a reason. |
Blue puppies Thanks to all for the info. Thanks LittleBeakerboy on the article.. It was of great help.... I will keep you posted on the health of the puppies :) |
no problem and i wish the best of luck with the puppies......by the way.. i have never seen a blue puppie... do you think you can get a pic and post it.....thanks... |
blue pups I have had 2 blue puppies out of a mom and dad they are beautiful , I have some pictures of them on the thread about my yorkie. Have had 2 boys ,the last boy we had is about 14mths now has a full coat no health problems etc.. This last blue pup is out of a single litter is doing great about 10 ounces now and big and fat seems to be just as healthy as the last. some one had written about the dilute do you think that it is coming from the male or female or both together is it worth breeding her to another male etc..... Have talked to a breeder down in IA and they have had 4 in 30 yrs said all that they have had are doing well all have hair and are healthy as of yet I have never heard anything about the dilute, do you know where I could get more info on this? |
1 Attachment(s) I just had 2 blue yorks over 11 weeks ago, there is nothing wrong with them, they are actually the most playfull out of all of them......They are boys and they do have the leathery skin, their ear hair was the 1st to go and then their forhead, now they have hair coming back on the ears in scattered spaces. They hair is rough and it is by no means a full coat. But my vet says that their hair will grow back, he has seen it before. I am wondering if a biopsy is worth it and can tell me than I already know.....Here is a picture of my boys in case you don't know what they look like.... |
Did you have these boys out of a litter yourself or did you buy them? How old were they when you got them? Have a pic of our blue and am curious if they lookes them same as pups color etc. Will try to get the picture of that older male on here, dont know for sure how or if I can it was not on a digital they sent it to me in the mail |
1 Attachment(s) Here is the blue coat I was talking about he is about 14mths and has a good coat his face has stayed blue I guess no hair loss , as you can see they have not trimmed his ears and they are full of hair he looks like he has turned black but I guess they said he has a dark blue color through out his coat. sorry for the mess on the pic my kids tried to cut it and then couldnt get it off |
Intresting..i've never heard of that before! I heard the white patch in the middle of their chest is bad too huh? My yorkie-poo has a little white patch in the middle, what does that mean again? |
I keep looking at the 14 month old puppy and I honestly cannot see that he is a true blue. The puppies shown do not look like the true blues I have seen. Do y'all have the pedigrees for these babies? In the article that says "I received a call----" I was the caller mentioned. YorkieRose gave me some info and I followed up on the blue baby I saw. These babies can be born with a thick-feeling coat but it feels rough and is definitely BLUE! When the blue puppy coat sheds the adult hair is wispy, patchy, and feels just like 300 grade steel wool. The ears are bald, the skin under any blue areas is rough sorta like a crested. I am not sure if I posted a pic of Jillian as adult or not. She is a delight to her mommy and is for most intents and purposes, healthy...might have hypothyroidism, but not diagnosed. I can post pics if interested.. |
