21st day of Heat Cycle I always thought the best days for a female to conceive was somewhere from day 11 to 14 of their heat cycle. Is it possible to conceive on the last day (21st day) of heat cycle?

Yes, it is possible but most of the time a breeding that late would not take. I had one tie one time on the 18th day and she had 1 puppy. Females are usually receptive for up to 3 full weeks.

My Yorkie was breed once on day 11, 12 & 13 of her cycle. There was never a tie, but there was penetration. I assumed this did the job. On her last day of cycle (21st day) the male got loose and there was a tie. I just assumed that this tie was too late in her cycle to cause pregnancy. She was x-rayed on January 19 and is going to have four pups. 65 days from the first mating was January 23. As of today, January 24, she has not had pups. I realize I could go a few more days because of the multiple breedings; but I'm now concerned that maybe she did not conceive from those breedings on days 11, 12 & 13. That it could possibly be from the breeding on the 21st day of her cycle. The Vet suggests not going past 70 days which is next Wednesday. But if she conceived from the breeding on the 21st day, Wednesday would only be day 60. I have not discussed this with my Vet yet because I just did not think it was possible for her to conceive on the last day of her cycle. She’ll go to the Vet if she hasn’t had the pups by Wednesday. What would you do? Have a c-section because of being possibly overdue or continue on with the pregnancy to see if she whelps on her own?

Are you feeling the puppies move much? If she is carrying 4 puppies then you should be feeling lots of movement if the earlier breedings took. If the breeding on her 21st day took then you would not be feeling strong movement. I have had females go 70 days and deliver with no problem. The female that I had that bred on the 18th day of her heat cycle had her pup 60 days from the tie. I would just about bet your girl got pregnant from the breeding on 13th day and she will probably have her puppies any time now. Please keep us posted.

I meant to ask, on the day you bred her where you said there was penetration but no tie, was it an outside tie where you just held him in place?

Yes I did hold him in place. But it probably lasted less than a minute each time on the 11, 12 & 13. There is a lot of movement from the pups. I've been taking her temperature, but I don't know if that works for her. She's been down in the 98 degrees several times but no pups yet.

I bet she is getting close since you are feeling lots of movement. How big is the momma to be? Is this her first litter? I know you must really be anxious, these puppy watches can be very stressful. Also, I want to welcome you to Yorkie Talk. We will be looking forward to seeing pictures. Best wishes for a safe whelping.

Don't confuse breeding dates with conception. Conception generally occurs 2 days post ovulation. Puppies are generally born 61-64 days after ovulation. The eggs are released with a 24 hour window and mature to allow penetration in another 24-48 hrs. That is why it is better to do progesterone or LH testing before breeding, so you can pinpoint the ovulation window and thus a better whelping window. Sperm can live 5-7 days. So a bitch who is bred on the 11th day, ovulates on the 15th day can still conceive, but you are working off the 15th day for gestation purposes not the 11th. Basically without knowing ovulation date you are looking at a huge window for possible whelping dates. I would rely on your vet's advice concerning whether she believes a section is a good idea or not. If the bitch is not in first stage labor and/or is not exhibiting problems I would tend to wait.

Lily had four pups early Sunday morning. All are doing well except one little guy that's dropped weight. I'm supplementing him and hope he'll gain weight. Thank you all very much for your wealth of knowledge. This is the best place to come and ask questions!

Congratulations on your new litter. I pray momma and babies will do well. Is the little male able to latch on and suckle on his own? I hope he does start gaining.

He is having a hard time latching on. When I bottle feed him I put a few drops on his mouth to encourage him to open and he does suckle from the bottle. I return him to mama and she cleans him. I always try to get him to suckle from mom but I'm not having any success.

How much does the little one weigh? Have you tried putting a little karo on the momma's nipple? It is possible that he has a cleft palate. Have you seen any milk coming out of his nose? Just keep working with him and hopefully he will get stronger and able to nurse on his own. There is nothing better that momma's milk.
