I don't mean to offend you in anyway but your yorkie will be great as a "PET" but not for breeding purposes! LOVE HER as a PET!!!!

Thank you but I wasn't really sure it was tactful, I meant it tactfully but wasn't sure it was lol...I just wish more people would study the standard and what health issues with this breed and any other breed before wanting to breed their family pet....

I am no expert but here's my 2 cents. I don't think dogs have to be perfect before they are bred, but they need to be close to their standard. You can take a dog with ears on the larger side, breed him with a dog with smaller ears and that is trying to enhance the line. They are giving good advice and trying to protect the future of the Yorkshire Terrier. Also consider the health risks to your girl when breeding. You never know when you might lose a dog due to birth complications.

Thanks for the nice advice, I have looked into her pedigree, not too far b/c it doesnt go that far, but I know her grandparents from both sides & You are right, the b/f I am considering is smaller, darker, & cute face, from what I have seen dad is silver, but gettin there now after 6 yrs. Dad is 5.5 lbs but alot of muscle, her mom is PURE black, so for her to get so much silver- is weird. Now a days there is NO such thing as a "perfect" yorkie. So many have messed up the breed, & I in no way want to continue that, but I would enjoy to start somewhere to make an attempt to make a better Yorkie, & I have looked into plenty of males to get to where I am at now. I alone wont fix that problem compared to the 100's of 1000's of irresponsible breeders that dont care at all, at least I know what to look for, & just b/c shes big doesnt mean her puppies will be, b/c mommy & daddy are both 5.5-7lbs, both have standing ears, why did my pup & her brothers ears never go up? Health wise- the dr says he doesnt see anything wrong with her, heck of a healthy lil girl for being bottle fed at 3wks.

Dont take to offense but some ppl try to look for advice on here not to get bashed & say DONT breed... at least im doing it responsibly, compared to most my friends & family who say- "ah why do you care so much, their just dogs, mother nature knows what she does"... but Im not thinking like that. Like i have alot of people mad at me b/c I wont sell a family that has a small child a puppy... they think im being too much of a diva, but they dont understand. Some are even ticked b/c Im forcing them to microchip, all these lil details that I know is important to the breed but ppl think its crap, I want to start breeding, Im young & I got to start somewhere, so Im hoping I can fix a piece of the breed with her. Thanks- but i hope you ladies understand!

I don't think he is to old to breed and I wouldn't be overly concerned with his weight, especially since your girl is 10 lbs. Alot of breeders don't think the weight issue is acceptable, but your girl might end up having small puppies like the grandparents. I have a mommy who is 5 lbs and the daddy is 3 1/2 lbs and their puppies who are now grown weigh 4.2, 4.8, 7.4 and 7.5 all from the same litter. And the grandparents are the same size as my mommy and daddy. Not everyone wants a teeny tiny yorkie. Good Luck to you.

Your dog is adorable. You know, you just never know I have found out, what they're going to turn out looking like. My 14 lb yorkie, came from 4 lb parents. Her parents both had beautiful hair, mine has nice colors, but, her hair never grew right, and she has terrible allergies. She is 6 years old and is still pretty dark, except for her face.
Now, I had another yorkie girl(my son has her now) and she is going on 2 and a beautiful silver almost white colored. I think I should have maybe gone ahead and bred her, she was 5 lbs and in my book, she was perfect. Look at her background, she may just be bigger like mine, yet produce small yorkies. Some mentioned you MIGHT get smaller yorkies from breeding two over-sized yorkies. Yes, that is true, they could possibly be nicely within standard. But, what happens then when someone else breeds two dogs they believe are within standards (one of them the puppy of your over-sized mating) and their puppies all turn out HUGE? That is how we get those 10 pound dogs from 4 & 5 pound parents. Somewhere in the grandparents, or great grandparents, someone decided to breed over sized yorkies. As sweet as they are, and sometimes even preferable to some people, that is not what yorkies are supposed to be.

And just as those puppies MIGHT be smaller than their parents, they could also be a great deal LARGER than their parents. Do you want to risk ending up with 20 pound yorkies? Is your girl going to be able to birth LARGE size pups without risk? I lost a momma yorkie I dearly loved, and she was nicely within standard as well as her sire. Enough can go wrong without inviting disaster.

I really believe if you want a larger dog to start out with, you should select a different breed. Of course if any of mine ever grew big, I would love them just the same, but I would neuter them.

I believe we all deserve an opinion on it though and when it comes right down to it, you own the dog and can do what you want. My 2cents.....

I just wanted to comment, that breeding o black dog to a silver won't make a blue. If a yorkie doesn't change it's colour from black, it doesn't have the right genes. I'd propably stay away from black colour.

How can you say you are breeding responsibly when you are breeding waaaaaaaaaaaaay off standard Yorkies? You ARE messing with the breed by doing this! You will never make a "better" Yorkie by breeding pet quality to pet quality. It would be better if you saved your money and start breeding quality Yorkies the correct way. Find a mentor, go to show and learn, learn, learn.
