How old is too old to breed a stud? I think i may have found a male to breed with my female, but the dog is 8yrs old & 7lbs, my lil girl will be 17months when shes ready to breed. Im wondering if this is too old to breed him already? Any advice? |
I would be more concerned about his size and less concerned about his age, to be perfectly honest. |

Most dogs dont have a problem breeding at 8 years of age. Too me, he is a little too large, especially if his back-ground is unknown. He might have been the smallest in his litter and his parents may weigh 10 lbs! How big is your female? I would not chance my females life/health on an unknown 7 lb stud. Please do a little more research before breeding your girl. |
AKC will accept a male's puppies until he is 10 years old. The male will have a lower sperm count the older they get, but still should be able to do so. If worried you could take him to repo vet and have a sperm count done to verify. |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ml#post2152185 If so, in all likelyhood, she is probably considerable over the standard weigh as an adult and should not be bred at all... |
Thanks everyone... she is 10lbs. But... she is "big boned" & a VERY strong lil girl. Her dad is 5lbs & tiny but he is also a strong lil guy, her mom is 7.5lbs. Her granmother on the mother side I was told, is about 8-9lbs. Maybe she got it from her grandmother side! I am considering breeding her once, so I can have her daughter & keep the line going, & alot of friends & family want a puppy. I was told that the good thing is b/c shes bigger she can carrying more puppies, & most likely she will end up having smaller pups! So I guess I cross my fingers for that! I will keep you all posted on her progress, she should be going into heat within the next week to 10 days! thanks! |

Have you studied her pedigree? Do you know if she has health issues in her lines? This is why I don't normally respond to these threads any longer because as you can see this is what people are doing to our beloved breed! UGH! I don't mean to offend you in anyway but your yorkie will be great as a "PET" but not for breeding purposes! LOVE HER as a PET!!!! Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

It just breaks my heart to see what backyard breeders have done to the wonderful breed I fell in love with many years ago. |
