Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Help with Milk drying up Jenna's had lots of milk but today she don't have hardly any. She was not eating or drinking hardly anything. I did get her to drink and eat this morning. The puppy sucks and sucks but don't seem to get a full belly. It will latch on to the teat really good but will not have anything to do with a dropper. Can I let my other mom nurse him? Will Jenna reject the puppy if I do that? Any advice is welcomed!

| If you have another mom that has pups close to the same age then she would probably gladly accept another pup. I have done that many times in the past with no problems. Jenna will probably be very upset though. If Jenna is nursing only one pup then she will not have a lot of milk. The momma's body will adjust and will not over produce milk. If the momma is not eating then that would be a real concern for me. Have you take the momma's temperature? As long as the momma is not running a temperature then I would just hand feed her and try to get her to eat several times a day and also give her some Nutri-cal. Best of luck. Please keep us posted. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | The other pup is a single to and she is 2 weeks old. That mom really don't have alot of milk either but her pup is really thriving. Jenna's boys seems strong and trys to nurse hard but not gaining weight at all. Do I just give mom the NutriCal once a day?

| Melissa, I would most definately let the little boy continue nursing on Jenna and then put him with the other mom for a extra snack then bring the pup back to Jenna. The pup needs to continue nursing Jenna so that she won't completely dry up. I'd take her to the vet tomorrow for a checkup to make sure that there isn't a medical problem. I know you are already doing this so continue working with Jenna to get her to eat and drink so that she has what she needs to produce milk. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to put too much stress on the other mom if she isn't producing much milk either. I can't really advise about the Nutra-Cal. I am sure that others here are more knowledgeable about it's use. I do know that Dr. Amy has cautioned me to ALWAYS make sure that they eat after taking Nurtr-Cal because it causes a quick rise in the blood sugar level and a quick drop about 20 minutes later. We saved a foal once by letting her nurse on a foster mom. It was very time consuming but it worked. We didn't want her birth mom to dry up, but she didn't have enough milk so..... We brought both mares and foals into the barn and every 3 - 4 hours round the clock for a week or so (it seemed more like months) we would take the little one across the hall to his "milk momma" and let him nurse and then back across the hall to his real mommy. Every one was happy and the foal thrived. Eventually the birth mom developed enough milk to support the foal. The milk mamma mare loved babies and would often nurse other foals out in the pasture. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | What about an oxy shot? Could my vet give her that? I know Jasmine had one but she had a csection. I am going to call when they open. He will not nurse the other mom. It is like he knows. As soon as I put him back with his mom he sucks like crazy. I started feeding him with a dropper last night to help. He sucks it really good and seem like nothing is going into the lungs. I am at a lose here. He seems to be strong but still has not gained any weight. He will be 5 days old today. I am open to all and any suggestions!

Mom now weights 4.12lbs and topped out at 5.12. She didn't eat much yesterday. I have to feed her in her box with a spoon or just be close to her when she eats. Try using chicken baby food with blended up puppy food and some syrup with vitamins in the mix. That's what I do and she finishes 90% of the mix. I use about a baby food cap: 2 full scoops of the blended food & a full jar of the chicken baby food. She isn't eating the hard stuff right now. Last edited by Leesha; 01-05-2009 at 06:24 AM. | |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Jenna won't eat or drink now. I am feeding her with by hand but not going to well. I took her to the vet and he said she looked really good and gave her an oxy shot. The puppy is still trying to nurse but no milk. I am feeding him with a dropper every few hours. Dr. started to have me tube feed but we decided agaist it since the puppy will suck.

| Melissa, just a idea that we've used with the horses. Rub a damp cloth on Jenna's tummy and then rub it on the other mom's stomach to get some of Jenna's scent on the other mom. Maybe you could trick the little guy into nursing the other mom. I am so very sorry about all the problems you are having with Jenna and her pup. My thoughts and prayers are with you. |

| I hope everything improves immediately! I have been hand feeding my girl bits of boiled chicken. She won't eat the dry food either. I gave her the post whelping pudding that she lapped up every couple of hours. I also offer her water too. She is just so unconcerned with seeking out food herself as she is so busy tending to the pups.
