| Thanks everyone for their input and links to the various articles. I actually have one read one of those articles. A question that I have for those who do breed, If you have a puppy that is placed as a pet, when do you want this puppy spayed? As early as 6 mos or would you insist on waiting at least 15 mos?

| My recommendation would be to wait until after the first heat but I am sure many here would argue about that. Personally, I think 6 months is too young. |

| For as many spays/neuters are there have been done, there seems to be so little information about timing and cons to the procedures. There was an article in the AVMA Journal about timing and I think you can find it on Google. One problem with spaying early is the whole growth issue. Dogs can become "leggy" and look out of proportion if they are altered too early. In large breeds, the risk for osteosarcoma increases slightly with early spay/neuter. I haven't read nearly enough about any of this but for a small breed dog, I think it is acceptable to do it at six months but before I have to make the decision again, I will be doing more research. Sorry, no help.

YT 2000 Club Member | Ok so if the dog is done growing at 6 months then why not spay? My toy poodle stopped growing at 5 months of age. Per the advice of my vet I had her spayed at 8 months. What happens if you dont want your pet to go into heat because of the risks of getting pregnant and having unwanted puppies, I know that there are precautions to take but not every pet owner is responsilbe, can you imagine all the unwanted dogs out there if all vets recommened that pets be spayed after thier first heat? I had my beagle spayed at 6 months of age and she still continued to grow to a normal size beagle, Ive had all of my cats spayed at 6 months of age and all of them continued to grow into full adult cats. Ive always had animals (small and large) growing up and we always had them spayed/neutered at a early age and none of them had any issues not growing or did any of them end up with any kind of cancer. SO Im not quite understanding that theory. I will have my new baby neutered at 6 months of ago unless my vet says to otherwise. good luck with your decision.
