For as many spays/neuters are there have been done, there seems to be so little information about timing and cons to the procedures.
There was an article in the AVMA Journal about timing and I think you can find it on Google.
One problem with spaying early is the whole growth issue. Dogs can become "leggy" and look out of proportion if they are altered too early. In large breeds, the risk for osteosarcoma increases slightly with early spay/neuter. I haven't read nearly enough about any of this but for a small breed dog, I think it is acceptable to do it at six months but before I have to make the decision again, I will be doing more research.
