Puppies are coming!!!! Our yorkie has been in labor since 5:30 tonight, she has been pushing and having irregular contractions since that time. About an hour ago a bag presented and has been hanging out. We called the vet and he said it's okay to let that hang out until 9:00 and then he would intervene. We cannot see a puppy in the bag, is this normal? This is our first experience with puppies and we are very nervous!!!! |
The bag that you are seeing is the "sac" that encompasses all of the pups. Each pup is enclosed in it's own bag. Where are you located - it is now 9:26 eastern daylight savings time. |
we are central so it is now 8:28 pm - and still just the bag is hanging out - there is no puppy in it yet. Is it normal for us to not see any puppies at this stage? |
Are you in Bellvue Washington? pacific time? Cindy is correct, the bag you are seeing is her water.. she will break it herself or it will break on it's own. Get ready and do not leave heer alone. If you need any help, I can PM you my phone number.. I am in California.. or I can call you from my cell (free long distance) |
Sunnie is a good one to talk to! She's in Bellevue NEBRASKA - right here in the heartland - Central Standard Time. Hang in there. KNow that I'm here for support too. |
Sonya, I guess we are "on call" for midwife duties tonight. :) I hope our poster gives us an update soon! |
Midwife? I've been called a "Midwoof" :) |
thank you so much for your offer. I just spoke with the vet and he is very close to here. We have now just 25 min before he wants to do something. in your experience - how long is it ok for the bag to hang out? Again - there is no puppy visible in the bag as of yet. We are very worried about her. btw, we live in bellevue, nebraska. Thanks so much for any and all advice! |
calling all midwooooofsss What can we do to help her? Our time is ticking...does this bag need to be broken? would it help? |
Hi - I'm Midwoof, Cindy. The best thing you can do for her right now is to calm down :). Let her know you are there but be discrete. DO NOT break the sack. I have had them showing for a couple of hours. My vet tells me if they are NOT pushing hard or they aren't in any distress then chances are things will be ok. BUT..... if your vet says bring her in then I'd be out the door. :) There are some really great experienced breeders here who will be able to provide some fantastic info. |
i really am calm - just showing my excitement on the computer. she is in her box and i am "discretely" in the corner. she is trying to get at the bag - she is just much too fat! She is sitting up and panting right now. |
:) Good - it sounds like she is on track. You caught her very early in the process. Do you know how many pups to expect? |
we think 3. we were told the xray is not very accurate? she is laying down sleeping again....... |
You might offer her some water. |
we have been giving her ice chips and vanilla ice cream |
Fantastic - it sounds like all is well Things will probably pick up when she wakes. |

Did your xrays not come out good? When did you have them taken? I had xrays done on my girl last year and it clearly showed 4 puppies.... and thats what we had. I know sometimes pups can be hidden behind others, but I thought that they were normally a pretty good indication of how many to expect. In any case, wanted to let you know I'm here; hopefully she will start having them soon. Good luck to the little mama and to you. And, welcome to Yorkie Talk. :) |
The vet just called and said that since she is resting comfortably that it is okay to let her go longer. She is pushing intermittently, only about every 10-15 minutes or so, but the sac does not appear to be moving anywhere. She is panting only every now and then. She keeps trying to get to the sac to lick it, but is so chubby that she just can't reach. We'll keep you posted... Thanks for the support! |
We saw three on xray, but vet said he always goes with plus or minus one. (Just in case) |

How's she doing now? What's her name? |
Sounds like things are still going okay. Do not try to break the sac, just let her do the work for now and keep a close watch on her. |
she broke her bag of water and is licking like crazy, panting harder. |
Watch her closely.. the first puppy could present at any time. You will be able to tell she is pushing because they normally will stretch thier neck up as they push (most, but not all). Be ready to help suction the throat and nose. |
Woohoo! I'm betting there will be a puppy arriving before too long! Do you have your whelping supplies handy & ready? Got the heating pad ready to keep the newborns warm while mom is busy delivering others? Stay calm and you and the little mama will do great! |
she is done licking like crazy now. she is just looking around at us like we are crazy. So now my question is - how long with the bag broke can we go? |
we do have all of the supplies ready to go - the heating pad is on and ready to go - we can't wait!!!! |
First litters can take a long time, but being a first timer, I would not let her go more than 2 hours before seeing a vet just for your peace of mind. |
Her name is Huxlee Vaughn. poor baby girl is workin hard |
What a cute name! What is her normal pre-pregnancy weight? |
:cheer: Okay, come one Huxlee Vaughn, you're almost there....YOU CAN DO IT! :cheer: |
