Stressfull Breeding Hi everyone this is my first post i hope someone can give me some advice. I have 2 yorkies Lilly & Mickey they just had puppies on Sept. 6th. I can tell you I have all new respect for you breeders. lilly's puppies were stuck and I had to take her to the ER she had 2 beautiful little girls and nine days later we only have one baby the other had a liver defect and had no chance. Breeding is not easy and from now on I will leave it to you people strong enough to deal with the problems that can come from breeding these perfect little dogs. I have a question i noticed today that Lilly has a clear discharge is that normal or is there a problem. she is not bothered by it so I wasn't sure. I would be greatfull for any advice. Suzieqzee

Awww, I am so very sorry to hear this news. I know this must be very hard for you to share, but I am glad you did. It definately takes a strong person to breed with good intentions. I question it daily myself. I hope that something positive comes of this and that someone will take heed of your story and consider it carefully in making the decision to or not to breed. Hugs!

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's a good thing you got her to the vet in time or you may have lost the other pup and the mom too. To answer your question, it is normal for the female to have a discharge following whelping. It could even have a bit of a bloody color to it. So long as Mom isn't running a temp and there's no sign of infection, she should be fine. With only one pup now, watch out for her having engorged teats. Also, watch out to make sure the pup doesn't get TOO fat. With all that milk available to only one, it's easy to wind up with a baby too fat to walk when it's time. You want to see a weight gain and a round firm tummy but not an obese pup. I'm not saying to deprive the pup of any meals, just don't let it nurse til it's about to pop.
