Sorry to hear of your loss. It's a good thing you got her to the vet in time or you may have lost the other pup and the mom too. To answer your question, it is normal for the female to have a discharge following whelping. It could even have a bit of a bloody color to it. So long as Mom isn't running a temp and there's no sign of infection, she should be fine. With only one pup now, watch out for her having engorged teats. Also, watch out to make sure the pup doesn't get TOO fat. With all that milk available to only one, it's easy to wind up with a baby too fat to walk when it's time. You want to see a weight gain and a round firm tummy but not an obese pup. I'm not saying to deprive the pup of any meals, just don't let it nurse til it's about to pop.
