| stud I made arrangements to breed Ciara to an AKC/UKC stud that's a UKC champion. Friday the 8th will be the 10th day of her heat. I'm supposed to take her to be bred Friday and Sunday. The problem is that she's showing signs of being ready as of this evening. Do you think Friday will be too late? Or should that still be within the window? |

| breeding That would make her 7 days in..could you be mistaken about when she came in the first day?...if Friday is truly her 10th day I see no problem waiting...many bitches act ready when the male is not around or may act ready with the male, but when the actual breeding begins, they growl, snap and back off if it is to early. |

| She started bleeding on the 29th. I know, because I'd been watching very carefully. I don't know what she'd do if I actually let them go. She may snap at him. The other day she sat down every time he came up behind her. If he was persistent she snapped at him. Today she's not doing that. If she's flagging, it's not all the time and it's hard to tell with the diaper on. I'm keeping very close watch on them. Plus, she is wearing a diaper and he is wearing a belly band, even when confined. She's still bleeding, but the last time she bled for 21 days straight and then her heat was over. |

| When Cookie was in heat, she seemed to be flaunting herself in front of Caesar. Ciara isn't doing that, but I don't know if it's a difference in personality or age or experience or what. |

| breeding SInce you have the stud there, why not try a breeding and see how she reacts? I think it is too early and you have time... |

| I hadn't planned on breeding her to Caesar this time. The stud I want to breed her to isn't here. I have to drive more than an hour and half to take her to him and since the stud's owner doesn't want to keep her, I have to drive her back two days later. I'm going to wait until Friday and Sunday as I had originally planned. Last edited by majic50; 08-06-2008 at 04:18 AM. |

| The foolproof method would be to have your vet draw blood and get her progesterone level, you will have a much better idea re; when she will ovulate. It is also nice since you can get a firm due date. The last 2 breedings I used progesterone testing, the first because we had to travel 10 hrs to the stud, the next just because I wanted to be sure the breeding took. I have a bitch here now to be bred to one of my boys without testing and I feel like I am throwing darts in the dark! I don't anticipate problems getting her bred but boy I like having that extra information, esp. with a maiden bitch whose ovulation pattern is unknown. |

I asked my vet about that and I'm still confused. Do they draw blood? If she's not ready do they have to draw blood again? Or is it something else?

♥My Lil' Monkey Girl♥ Donating Member | What I did! The one thing i did when Peyton was in heat i set up a Friday for her to be bred. But she was showing signs to us four days earlier. We then contacted the breeder and asked if we could come in to check she said yes. The signs she gave us was that she would back up to our leg. But the main thing the breeder told us to try doing is place our hand on her lower back and if her tail went to the side he was ready and to bring her in. We did this and indeed her tail went to the side and we took her that afternoon and then again two days later. She did get pregnant and on July 25th she just had her first litter of four puppies two girls and two boys. Good Luck hope everything goes good for you and your girl! Keep us posted!

| The vet draws blood which is sent to a lab. The next day he will get the results. I usually draw first around day 5 which tends to show a slight increase but not ovulation, Then we draw again 2 days later and on my girls I usually hear about day 8 or 9 that their progesterone level from the day before showed then on the verge of ovulating. I usually do a breeding the day I hear that (so it is the day of ovulation or soon after) then 2 days later. The eggs are not ready to fertilize for 1-2 days post ovulation anyway. The due date is 63 days, give or take a day, from the day of ovulation (not fertilization). Since you are later in the cycle your draw might show her on the verge of ovulation if you pulled today, or that she is still a few days away, or that she already did! I am just the type A personality that needs as much info as possible... |

If I go by this, then she's ready today, but between my grandchildren's schedules and the breeder's schedule, I can't take her today. So my kids have arranged to send my grandkids to daycare tomorrow and I guess I will have to wait until then. That's better than waiting until Friday. I'm just waiting to hear from the breeder that that's acceptable to him.

Yes this is the agreement. If she doesn't take, or doesn't have at least 1 live puppy, I can breed her again on her next heat.
