Pearl's smallest was the only girl, 2.7 oz. at birth. It took about 6 hours to get her to latch on and nurse. I had to hold a nipple in place, hold her to it and squirt some milk to give her a taste. She was so weak at first she couldn't stay on so I held her and gradually loosed my grip til she held on by herself. At first i had to move the 2 bigger ones aside as they finished nursing and let the 2 small ones have at it ( one boy was 3.2 oz.). They're now 3 days old and all are gaining weight and are doing well. The 2 bigger ones already look like little porkers. As long as your small one gets his share, he'll gain strength quickly. I used Nutri-drops on the babies and with Pearl to give them a good start. The little girl today weighed 3.9 oz., a gain of 1.2 since birth.

That picture is ADOREABLE!! The way she has her arm around her brother is too cute. Your little boy must be about the size of an eye dropper...just precious Last edited by Woogie Man; 07-03-2008 at 08:21 PM. Reason: correction

| The pups and Lily did great last night. Lily is a great mama. It sure is amazing how they just know what they have to do for their pups like keeping them warm, licking them so they go potty. I am a little worried that the little guy went from 2 3/8 oz to 2 oz. I am going to have to make sure he feeds more frequently and efficiently today.

I got my Nutri-Drops from Revival Animal Health. I've never seen it available locally so I keep some on hand. From what I know, the main benefit of Nutri-Drops is how quickly it gets into their system. If all you can find is the Nutri-Cal, then use that. If your little boy is eating and not in immediate distress, that should help him along. The weight loss may be that he's not getting as much milk as you think even though he's nursing. With my little girl, I got right down on the floor up close and made sure she was actually working the teat and getting something before I relaxed a bit. She gained .5 oz. her first day and was showing a nice round tummy. She has gained every day except for today. She had no gain since yesterday but hasn't lost any weight either. I would try to make sure he gets a good meal from Mom but you don't want to wait too long and may want to supplement him to get him going. You really want to see a weight gain ASAP..a little one like that has no reserve. Good luck and keep a close eye on him...like constantly until he shows a gain.

Is he actually working the teat with his paws? That is a good indicator that he's getting something.
