| "Drop Ears"... Are "drop ears" a genetic trait?

| Yes, it can be caused by genetics.

| I do believe there is a genetic component to flop vs. erect ears. Yes, hair might weigh some ears down and taping may make some stand that otherwise wouldn't, but I feel like most of the time ears will either stand or they won't. The size and thickness of the ears is genetic which will ultimately determine if the ears will be erect or floppy. I personally don't think a yorkie with floppy ears should be be bred...and I personally would not purchase a puppy that had a flop-eared sire or dam. Floppy ears can be cute on a yorkie, but I very much prefer the erect ears as they contribute to terrier look of a yorkie (and it is the standard).

My Amelia, as you may know, has drop ears.... they were erect as a pup until her owners grew out her coat and never trimmed the ears.... both sire and dam have erect ears. Once I got her home, I shaved and trimmed the ears... taped... shaved, trimmed... taped.... and finally, they stood..... for a month! Now they're down again.... She's a year old and I'll probably continue to get her ears to stand... but if they don't, I'm curious as to whether I should reconsider breeding her just for that reason alone. Lots to mull over lately....

| If they are really big, thick leather, I'd reconsider. A long time ago I recieved a female at 10 months who's ears were down. Her puppies ears stood up easily. Just My Experience |
