Tail Docking Sassy had a singleton. She is 5 oz. Do you think I should still wait til she is 10 days old to get her tail docked? She is 2.1 oz bigger than Sassy's last litter was. Thanks! |
You would never wait that long to get the tails docked. I do mine at 4 days, sometimes 5 days if the puppy is very small. As long as the puppy is nursing well and not a weak puppy then it would be safe to get her tail docked at 5 days, JMO. |
My Vet. likes to do there tails when the puppies are 4-5 day's old , and not to much older he said they have less pain and dont feel it as much. |

My rule of thumb is 4 days. I would never wait for 10 days... that doesn't make sense to me. The bigger they get, they bigger everything gets and there is more blood. I do the clamp and twist method and have never had one bleed. It sounds to me that you are inexperienced at docking a tail yourself so I would definitely take the puppy to the vet and have them do it. Have them walk you through it if you plan to do this for yourself in the future. Also, I did tails and dewclaws on 2 puppies yesterday. One weighed 4oz. at birth and the other was 5oz. at birth. |

I've never heard of 10 days. I waited till mine were 4 days old this time with Nala Because they were so tiny. Several under 3 oz. Even with that extra day those poor puppies cried a lot more then normal. My old vet would not do them after 3 days. And I mean down to the hour. He said it hurts them too much otherwise. |

Wow! I am sooo glad I asked. I've had two California breeders tell me to do it at 10 days. I will never again let the breeder dock them at 10 days. No way! The last pup came back to me shaking and I was horrified. I ended up keeping her and she doesn't have a psychological issues thank god! :-) I couldn't see myself doing the tails/dewclaws myself either. Now I need to find a vet/experienced person in Southern California to do this for me asap. She is now 2 days old, so we're getting down to the wire here. Anyone know of any good breeders/vets in Socal? Thanks again for the help!!! |

:thumbup: i took pebbles pups at 5 days old. the vet brought out a standard book and showed me what the standard for yorkies tails were and then showed me exactly where she would cut before she did it! i think they turned out great! |
I thought this was a little odd...but, hey Quote:

i always do between 3-5 days. If I have a tiny one three or so oz. I wait until the 4th day or even the fifth. Wow!!!!!!!!! ten days has to be painful for the puppy. |
Chizzie's Chat Six Pack had their tails docked and dew claws removed today at 5 days. I prefer to have them done on day 4, but my favorite vet was on vacation and I felt it worth while to wait until day 5 to have Dr. Amy do it. |
Why dock? I do not think I will be docking my Rose's pups tails when they are born. Due May 28th. If they were going to be shown, maybe. |

I agee....10 days is way to long to wait...poor babies :( |
Ok I have no idea what you guys are talking about! Why do you dock a tail and what is it? |
c'mon your just kidding us right!? |
No? Why would I be kidding? I have only had a dog for 2 weeks. Before that I had cats. But my hubby is allergic to cats and I've always wanted a yorkie, so we got one :D |

The vet I worked for a few years ago and the vet I currently use recommends docking tails between 1 and 3 days. I couldn't see docking them after 5 days |
I dock my own, and I do them at 2-3 days, depending on size of the puppies. I never wait longer than 4. |
I do not dock tails.. my vet does it great.. times change.. for 10 years ago.. tails were not at one day old.. never a problem, or any crying..now they wait for day 4-5 and they always cry.. not sure why they changed it..but I would rather go back to day one.. But 10 days.. and this is from breeders.. wow unbelievable....anne |
OMG!! That just sounds so cruel! How do you dock a tail? |

I just simply clamp and cut...and leave the hemostat on there for several minutes before removing it. I've never seen one bleed. |
holy crap.. I could not dock a tail in this method.. I am sure..but thanks for sharing that video nicki....anne |
I couldn't even watch the video...lol. I get the heebie jeebies. |
