| Something i never thought i would ever say! I want to get into breeding. Not right now of course i want to give myself at least a year of learning and researching and tons and tons of reading. After having my sweet little babies a couple who are not standard bred and one even poorly bred I want to make that better.... better the breed as some would say. I could never imagine my life without my babies and i want to be able to give that joy to others. I know that there is very little profit if any in breeding and i don't care that is not why i want to do this. I might go in the red and i still don't care. Because like i said that has nothing to do with why i want to do this. Okay that being said my question is. Are there any books or websites that i need to buy or read? I know there are the threads here and i plan on reading them religously but other than that any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh and also my babies are just that my babies and i do not plan on breeding them. Not to mention i only have one baby that would even be able to breed and he is my little man and i don't want his attitude to change so he is not a possibility. I plan on getting a breeding pair. That is another delima for me where do i start on even finding the breeding pair? I know it is nothing i need to do right now being that i want to give myself at least a year to learn. But i do want to research on what to look for what questions to ask etc. Thanks guys i never thought i would ever even consider doing this but these babies have just changed me so much they are so wonderful!!!!!!!!!!

| Only one and she isn't what i would call close she is 2 hours and 45 minutes away. There is one breeder that lives 5 miles from me and she is a show breeder but she breeds minpins not yorkies.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Seems to me you could learn from both breeders. The one who's close by you might allow you to watch a delivery, and see how she takes cares of pups. This would be enough for me to drop out of the breeding game. I think it's important to know exactly what the actual "work" is like before you invest too much time in something. I think many people fantasize about certain jobs and the realities are much different. You seem to not like the idea of driving 3 hours to see the Yorkie breeder, and from what I've read, driving is their second occupation, especially if you're going to show. I would think at first you would want to attend as many shows as possible, even if you don't plan to show, to develop an "eye" for a good dog, and to meet good breeders to advise you. I think you also have to be realistic on the initial costs of doing this properly, and realize, that there will never be any real income from this, unless you consider 2 cents an hour "income."

| I dont have any advice on breeding, but it seems like your going to get off on a good start since you want to study everything first. I just wanted to say good luck!

| Definately start attending as many dog shows as you can so you can start learning what this is all about. When I got "into dogs" there was no internet. So I started by buying books and calling breeders of the dogs in those books. Some were very helpful. My advice to you would be to buy as good as a male as you can find and learn the show game with him. Hopefully there is a good handling class that you and he can attend. I think if you want to breed, you need to get into the show world and it really is a lot of fun. You'll make a lot of new friends with the same interest as you. It's really an exciting thing to get into. A good tidbit of advice I would like to give you is to keep a low profile and listen but don't say too much ESPECIALLY about other people's dogs. Dog people take offense very easily and many of them can be evil at first until they accept you. Many new people get very insulted and get their feelings trampled. Here's an example. I went with non dog show person girlfriend to a dog show. She felt the need to go up to a "big handler" and give her a compliment on her dog. I begged her not to do it. Well, the handler brushed her off rudely and my girlfriend was very insulted. Lot's of them look at newbies as nuisances. Good luck and enjoy your new obsession. |

| Who in their right mind would put up with that life? ...Here's an example. I went with non dog show person girlfriend to a dog show. She felt the need to go up to a "big handler" and give her a compliment on her dog. I begged her not to do it. Well, the handler brushed her off rudely and my girlfriend was very insulted. That's disgusting. We're supposed to prepare for and expect rude treatment by the so-called "big" dog show people? OMG this is way toooo weird for me. |

Income is not even considered in this i don't care about the money one bit. I actually plan on putting alot into it to even get started and i do not plan on getting any of it back. I am not in it for a singel red cent like i said i could go in the red everytime and not care. I am only wanting to do this for the yorkie breed. I have been there with pups & kittens being delivered. My old baby Chiquita had one pup once that was 1/4 her size and of course she had major complications. Well on the rush to the vet as i was on the phone with him he had me deliver the pups head myself. Then when we got there being that it was a emergency and he had no one else there. I had to assist him with the surgery prep. I was there when he put her under and when he delivered teh pup c-section i was there helping with the cleaing and the suctioning while he was sewing my baby cak up. Also when my bassett hound had 11 pups. The momma couldn't feed them because her milk just never came in i was up all night with no sleep for what seemed like forever. There was even one out of the 11 that the vet said didn't stand a chance but i wasn't giving up i kept it up with the rubbing and the swinging and he ended up making it. So i am not totally new to the birthing scene but i am way far from knowing enough to venture into it yet. That is why i am giving myself at least a year to reseach and get ready. No the drive is not to much at all but i don't know how that breeder's schecule is or if they would even want to help. Because i know they have alot on their plate right now without trying to mentor a newbie like me. As far as the shows go i am already working on it i have been the site where i can find out when and where each show is being held and they are already going in my calender because i plan on attending as many as i possibly can. Like i said this is not something that i am jumping into lightly and i plan on attending many shows and doing much research and yes even talking to as many breeders as i can and seeing ifi can even watch with the deliveries. Thanks for your input but this is not something i am taking lightly and it is also not for money as i plan on making none and even possibly being in the hole i am doing this only to better the breed.

| just reading this thread and thanks for the laugh I know several well known handlers and they usually just try to avoid all the drama that some people tend to get going if you hang around ringside enough you will see it/hear it etc. I can understand their need to keep themselves away from it all. And they do need to get back to the dogs that they are being paid to show and also care for. (usually they do have their groomers and assistants with them also) Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |

It is totally wierd. Watch the dog show movie again. I can't remember the name of it now. It's so funny because there's a lot of reality involved in the insanity of that movie. | |
