BRB. Well I never heard that expression until I joined YT, many moons ago. My understanding of that comment means, people who keep a large amount of dogs, in bad conditions, not having any consideration for the dog, breeding them constantly, and only in it for the money, so on and so on.:mad.
What Im saying is. That if you show your dog, you cannot be called a BRB. . I no of some people including myself, who have breed their dogs, with the upmost of care and love, and also a lot of research and help and have never showed their dogs. And I certainly would not put them in the frame of a BRB. So if I lived in America, would I be called a BRB. . I mean i would take this as a total insult. I guess because I live in a different country, I see things a bit different form my ameican friends.
Please tell me if i've got it right.

What you described above seems to be more of a puppymill in my opinion...not a byb

I didn't know the admin moved my thred to the Breeder Talk section or I would have commented earlier! Breeders who ask $5000+ for their pet puppies...come on! I do agree people breed to supplement their income, and that's why the breed has been diluted in a sense...it's sad. :(

This is a good comparison of reputable breeders and backyard breeders. Of course, with smaller dogs like Yorkies, they may not literally keep their dogs in the backyard but the breeding practices are similar.

A thanks what a great link. So BRB and puppymills are more or less the same, but as you say, smaller dogs may be kept in the home.

So what the link is saying is that someone who doesn't show their dogs, are BRB,. I think this is very unfair, and pretty sad really. What about the great breeders we have on YT who don't show. Are they classed as BRB.
Am just so curious about the names some people are labeled under.:confused:

I don't think you have to show, but the breeder should still have their dogs evaluated to make sure they are good representations of the breed & are perfectly healthy. A BYB doesn't breed to improve the breed at all - they just breed two dogs together to produce puppies, and they usually don't do any health screening before breeding. The number of dogs and conditions lived in doesn't neccessarily make someone a byb...I've seen byb's that only own one male and one female - they are their family pets - and are just breeding because they want puppies. I've seen byb's that have several dogs kept in kennels...that could almost be considered a puppymill. and I've seen byb's in between those two extremes. I think one of the defining things to me is that a reputable breeder breeds to improve the breed - they strive to breed "show quality" dogs (even if they aren't actually showing), and they health screen their dogs before breeding to the best of their ability. There are other things I'd look for in deciding if a breeder is reputable, but those are just a couple that I feel are important.

To me byb's are those breeders that do not research their dog's pedigrees and are in the breeding business to make money to suppliment their income and do not care about the health of their puppies or adults or just breeding the family pet because oh I want my little doggie to have a litter and maybe keep one and sell the rest. I'm not talking about the hobby breeder that does it with loving care :)
I don't think you have to show necessarily but in my eyes it's a plus and no not all show breeders are reputable either. :)

Well being honest is part of being a reputable breeder. I know I've probably ticked some folks off and really it's not my intentions. I work so hard to improve what I believe to be the best representation of the breed in the yorkies I have. It's so important to me that I strive for health overall and then everything else will fall into place. Breeding is not easy and there is no perfect yorkie or dog for that matter and I love them all but again it's so important that I keep educating myself and do the right thing. I get passionate :) but my heart and love for this breed is in the right place :)

Well you are certainly educating me. And if that helps me in my passion to maybe some day be as great of some of our YT breeders, then for that I thank you very much. :D

No thanks needed, just do research and more research and know what you want to do and doing the right thing in mind and then things will fall into place.

You seem to be a down to earth show breeder.. and one that does not judge so easily as some can be..
I am not referring to YT in peticular, just speaking in general of show breeders.
I like to read your posts, as I am sure others feel the same..

you are so very wrong in your assumption that ONLY show breeders know the standard and are the ONLY ones that should be breeding. i won't even qualify( because i would surely get suspended if I wrote what I am thinking about your statement) your statement with anything else except to say that the first thing any ethical, serious breeder show or not should do is learn the standard. Read it and study it over and over until you can quote it without even looking and till you know just by looking that a dog is 'in standard" or not.
