| Size, coloring, etc. are determined by the genes. One gene is contributed from both the sire and the dam. Different traits are determined by these genes by whether they are dominant or recessive traits. If a parent carries both genes for a dominant or a recessive trait, it is homozygous for that trait. If it carries a gene for both a dominant and a recessive trait it will demonstrate the dominate trait but will be heterozygous for either trait. Example: it may be 5 pounds but carry the recessive gene for 10 pounds and produce a 10 pound offspring.

| Thats kinda neat to know. I would love to bring that up casually in a conversation. Of course I don't know how smooth I could possibly make that transition... |

| Just walk up to someone with huge ears and say, "Did you know that those elephant ears of yours are recessive, making you homozygous recessive for those suckers! That means even if their mom has the prettiest little ears you've ever seen unless she's pure for those ears there's a 50/50 chance that your poor kid will get those honkers too!"
