picking your brain ok, Ive learned that the female determines the number of puppies, the male determines the sex of the puppies. But...what determines size, coloring, etc? |
Size, coloring, etc. are determined by the genes. One gene is contributed from both the sire and the dam. Different traits are determined by these genes by whether they are dominant or recessive traits. If a parent carries both genes for a dominant or a recessive trait, it is homozygous for that trait. If it carries a gene for both a dominant and a recessive trait it will demonstrate the dominate trait but will be heterozygous for either trait. Example: it may be 5 pounds but carry the recessive gene for 10 pounds and produce a 10 pound offspring. |
Thats kinda neat to know. I would love to bring that up casually in a conversation. Of course I don't know how smooth I could possibly make that transition... |
