to palpatate or not

was wondering if any of you take you females in to the vet for palpatation to determine pregnancy or do you use ultrasound. I have read so many different opinions and was trying to decide if I should do one over the other or neither. I would like to know if abby is expecting. She seems to be pg, but she seemed that way last time and ended up not. anyway was just wondering? Thanks

I do not take my girls in to see if they are pregnant, why pay the vet to guess or the price of the ultra sound,that sometimes is not right. Try and be patient and wait a week or two and you will know with out spending the money.

I try not to go to the vet for things that are not needed.
Sick dogs go to the vet so that means the chance of exposing her to germs.
So I would be patient and wait.

I do not go to the vet unless it is something I can not do myself...I wait until time for a pre-whelping check/ xray..best wishes...
PS...a friend took her girl to the vet at the proper week and the vet said, "no pups"...she gave birth to SEVEN...you would think the vet could feel at least one or two???

By the time I DO go to the vet for an ultrasound (around 50 days) it's for reasons other that to find out concretely if the female is prego.
Generally, I can tell weeks prior and if I'm unsure. No decision I would need to make regarding pre-natal care would hinge on a definate 'yes' or 'no' from the vet so for me it would relly be a pointless visit.

i agree with the others i never take mine in to vet until time to ck and make sure puppies will be delivered safely thru her pelvic area,

I would wait it out. Why pay an extra vet bill? You'll have plenty if she is pregant.

Save your money for the x-ray and any emergencies that may arise. Why risk taking mom into a vets and have her get sick from other dogs/pets there when you dont have too.

most vets do not specialize in reproduction in dogs, and knowing how to palpate for puppies takes experience to get it down good enough to know what you are feeling for. Also I dont know how true it is, since I have never bred a Yorkie, but isnt it dangerous to the baby pups to palpate on a small breed dog? You can actually kill one of them if you are too rough.

Like others have mentioned already, I would just wait, its hard waiting but its money you dont have to spend and you might not get the right answer either. Good luck and if she is please keep us updated with puppy pics!

Thanks guys! It is hard to wait, and no need to pay for something that really isn't needed. A lot of the books that you read say to do this around this time, wo was just wondering. This is my first time breeding a yorkie. Last time we had puppies was about 18 years ago and she was a norwegian elkhound. I had her paplated and the vet said no puppies. She later had 1 pup, which the vet said she may have been carrying high under her ribs and he couldn't feel. Oh well live and learn. Thanks so much for all the information. It is hard to wait...especially with the first litter. Is she or isn't she, it's hard not knowing. That's the way I was with Lexie and yes, I did have the vet palpatate to know for sure. But now that I know what signs to look for, I will just mark my calendar with the "tie" dates count 63 days and go from there. I will always have an xray though near the end to know how many pups to expect. Good luck with your female...hope she is PG this time.
