Celebrating Eddie's 4th birthday today
Today is Eddie's 4th birthday, and I'm celebrating.
I never gave birthdays much thought. As a kid, they meant we got presents and ate cake and ice cream until we got sick. No one cared why.
Not having my own kids probably delayed my appreciation of birthdays. I'm happy that friends and family members were born, yes, but parties and gifts seem obligatory.
But, this year especially, Eddie's birthday means something to me. In many ways, he's changed my life.
I went from someone who didn't really have a focus in my personal life to a bona fide dog person. In the last four years, Eddie and I have been on almost 3,000 walks and taken 76 weeks of formal obedience classes. He's been the star of hundreds of pictures seen by people scattered all over the world. He's been featured in many of my 52 YouTube videos, which have been viewed more than 22,000 times. I started a dog blog at my newspaper and get anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 hits a month. I brag about being a Yorkie nerd.
Eddie has passed his Canine Good Citizen test, his therapy dog test and he went head-to-head with 30 Alaska dogs and placed second in this year's Alaska Pet Idol contest. He will be starting his hospital visits as a therapy dog next month.
I'm truly delighted that he has lived to be 4 years old. Not all Yorkies are so lucky. Between diseases and accidents and thieves and predators, the unthinkable can come at any time. I worry about those things all year, so today I'm going to celebrate. He made it to 4. Hurray for Eddie. Hurray for me and my family. Hurray for everyone whom he has made smile.

| |  Yeah. I woke up one morning and Rusty had chewed the base of his tail. Took him to the vet, and they said his anal grands were full and infected. They cleaned and flushed them, and that seems to have solved the problem. The hair is finally growing back. Am I the only one who had never heard of anal glands until I got a Yorkie? |
