HI EVERYONE!!
My name is donna, and I have a 9 month old yorkie name rocky. Just wanted some info on spay/nueter clinics, has anyone had any experience at these clinics. They are way more afforable then my vet. and since IM a college student on a budget, A spay/neuter clinic would at my price range. I don't know anyone who has been to these clinics and was wondering if they are just as experienced and responsible as a vet.

I have not heard of such clinics. Where abouts do you live? Are you looking to only spay/neuter Rocky or are you looking for overall health check or work there?

I live in the phoenix metro area, but im from seattle and I'm going to be in town In Jan. DO you happen to know the price range over there fast eddie?.
Rocky needs to get neutered and he has lots of baby teeth that need to be pulled. When I called to see if the spay/nueter clinics have dealt with small dogs, one of the workers told me they have worked with lots of yorkies. Im just curious about what other questions I should ask..?? thanks for your response.

Im just worried that the clinics won't be as responsible, but Rocky really does need the procedure done and hes teeth pulled. I think he might have over 7 teeth that need to be pulled!!

The spay/neuter clinics sponsored by our local humane society are performed by vets who volunteer their time or do the operations at a greatly reduced rate. Perhaps this is not the case in other places, so I'm not much help......

we have a lot of cheap spay & neuter clinics here in la but they mostly deal with a lot of strays, meaning large sized tough dogs. for a fragile yorkie considering they're so tiny i don't know how experience they would really be.

yorkies are known to a hard time going under anesthesia, so since that is an issue i don't think bargain hunting is important when compared to the safety of your pup. a responsible vet will make bloodwork mandatory prior to performing the surgery. when i had my 2 lb chi neutered it was only $45 for the bloodwork & $100 for the surgery itself, so $145 total. not bad at all, considering it was my regular vet that i know & trust, and it came with peace of mind that because they did a blood panel they knew exactly how to put him down and exactly how much he needed, how long he would be under, etc.

good luck whatever you decide. the procedure itself is simple, the anesthesia is the only thing i would worry about with such a little dog. ask the vet if they use gas or if they use injections. my friends puppy died from the injection, then her regular vet told her that was a big no-no. it can be really risky for them.

Thanks guys for the help. I usually go to the vet on the militarty base. And they don't do surgeries there. Well now that I know a little more info, I can ask more questions when I call civilian vets. I have been debating whether to go to a regular vet or spay/nueter clinic...But my Babys life is priceless. So I would rather pay the extra. I really apreciate all your responses. thanks again

Donna I can be of no help whatsoever as I'm in Wales but please let us know how it goes with Rocky? Gypsy Rose was spayed by our vet in July and had 5 baby teeth pulled out and it's a good time to do it! Love, Ana xx

I will keep you guys posted. I am thinkin of having Rocky neutered in Dec. when Im out of school, so I can spend time with him. He will be almost a year by then...Is that too long of a wait??

The earlier the better, preferably around 5 or 6 months, so they don't get used to "marking" their territory. When they start to lift that little leg, it's time. 'Course the first time Higgins lifted his leg, he lifted it so high he fell over! That was right at 5 months for him. Now he lifts half the time and squats half the time. Isn't a real busy marker, thank heavens.

If you have to wait until 1 year, that's fine, but early is a bit better. We had it done at the Alderwood Companion Hospital (19511 24th Avenue West, Lynnwood, WA 98036 Phone: (425) 775-7655) and it was $105 when we did it last year. They love Yorkies, well, at least they love Yoda! :P

Give them a call, they should be able to answer any questions you may have!

Donna, when our schedule looked like we would be out of town until Toto was almost 8 months old, our "Dr. Lucy" assured us that it would be OK to wait, it's a little different for little ones. Toto did great, but it is a good idea to plan your time so you can be home with Rocky. She just slept and rested and acted like her feelings were hurt!!

After a couple of days she was ripping around like her old self and we had to try to hold her back because of her stitches!

BTW ... Higgin's Mom didn't tell you why he doesn't "mark his territory" much! That's because he knows it's all "his territory"!!!

Rocky just started lifting his leg three weeks ago. He is turnin 10 months on the 22nd!! I know I waited a long time!! Along with lifting his leg, he also started barking at me! esp. when Im on the phone or the comp. Well guys thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. I really didnt know what questions to ask when callin vets. Thanks again.
