Shock collars ,,,, cruel or helpful??, Im interested in these, but not sure if they are mean.... Im wondering about the No bark ones. I've tried everything to stop him from barking at EVERYTHING that goes by the window,,, any advise or advise on these collars would be helpful! Thanx

In my opinion, it totally depends on what kind of "shock" collar you buy and how it works, safety features, etc. We used one to teach Sully not to bark and only used it for about a month, only when we left him alone in the house in his kennel (he used to bark, bark, bark) And it worked like a charm! Now we have no barking problems at ALL! He still barks, but he knows the difference between "good" and "bad" barking, I guess you could say.

I know everyone will have a different opinion on this....and I hate people to think I'm cruel b/c my husband and I used one on Sully, but it was SO mild! We tested it on ourselves and we always kept it on the lowest settings. It was barely noticible...but to our little dog, it did the trick. We're not cruel people, I promise! We love our little Sully - He's our world!

If you are thinking about a correction collar you may want to check into no-shock anti-bark collar or otherwise know as a spray collar.

It works the same way as a spray bottle. It is bark activated. When your dog bark, it spray citronella.

Only downfall is that your dog has to be 6lbs and over to be able to carry the collar on it's neck.

I don't have any barking problems with Bailey, yet (KNOCKING ON WOOD AS I TYPE) but have used the No Bark collar system on my chihuahua (whom has since passed away) and it worked like a charm. It was a collar that doesn't shock twice in a row like some do. I absolutely don't agree with those. (The ones that shock when the dog barks and then when it yelps from being startled, it shocks again

) If you decide to go with using one, make sure it's either a remote collar (where you can control when it shocks - but obviously this type only works when you're home) or a safety collar (where it doesn't shock twice in a row - most of the cheaper ones are these). I think we paid $75 for the system off of Ebay.

We tested it on ourselves before we ever put it on our chi and it's really nothing. It's more to startle the dog than anything (well at least the system we used). And we only had to use it for a week I think

I'm having a problem with SImon barking too and I was looking today and found an ultrasonic bark control device. Has anyone used these? It is by Petsafe and supposedly sends a noise when the barking starts that startles the dog but is only heard by them. It's $40 and has a 10 foot range. Let me know as I need to curb SImon's barking before we get evicted. I've tried the water bottle and now when I spray him he just licks his little mouth like I'm giving him a drink then continues to bark. cute but not tolerable....

My neighbor has one of these for her maltipoo. It doesn't work at all, with her dog. I'm actually loaning our system to her this weekend, to use. She basically wasted $35. Maybe it'll work for you though

I kind of had that feeling. Glad I asked before I spent $40! Are their systems that work for dogs under 8 pounds? Simon is 5 pounds and the ones I have seen are for dogs over 8 pounds. Thanks for the input.

Passionfruition, I have NO DOUBT that you are a loving Mommy. Can you tell me the type and name of the collar you used. My CASSIUS has started to bark non stop when his in his house while I'm gone . I left the house and sat in my car for over 20 mins to see if he would stop and he didn't. I gave in and took him with me, but I'm not able to do that all the time and I'd like a safe alternative.

Muzzles are cruel looking and I don't want to go that route .
