| ![]() it's me and my girlfriend's 1year anniversary so we decided to share a dog we've always wanted, a yorkie. First and foremost, i wish we had known about this message board beforehand, we could have saved a lot of money if we purchased our yorkie from someone on this board. So we went to Pet Company last wednesday, March 30th, 05 and right away we fell inlove with the first yorkie we saw so we just had to have her. I noticed that yorkies for sale on this board average around $1,000, but we purchased ours for $2,500. That same night we were able to take her home with us. At first she was very playful and always seemed to want to bite on anything she can grab. She is now exactly 3 months and 5 days old, so I am guessing that her teeth are growing? maybe that's why she wants to bite on whatever comes her way? That same night as well, we noticed that she was either sneezing quite often or coughing, we really didn't know. So the next day, I fed her what the people from Pet Company told me to feed her with the dog food that we purchased. Throughout the day she would cough. Also, she really did not touch her food at all, I mixed the food with water, and she just seem to drink the water and leave the food out in the bowl. I really don't know what is going on with her. And last but not least, she was sleeping a lot the whole day and night Thursday. Are any of following that I have just described normal? It is now friday, I will take her to the vet tonight at 6pm EST. Please if you are reading this, do you have any suggestions? guidance? any help is GREATLY appreciated. We want our new yorkie to be strong and healthy, and for the first 2 days we've had her, she has yet to show us that. Hopefully she's not sick ![]() Thank you for your time, Last edited by simonandhallie; 07-06-2007 at 04:40 AM. |

| ![]() $2,500 for a Yorkie is so expensive! (In my opinion..) I bought my Yorkie for $400.00! Is Pet Company a petstore?? I've been on this site for about a good 2 months, and from what you described and everything I've learned.. your little Yorkie might have kennel cough. And with the whole eating situation, learning this from my breeder, she told me that a lot of Yorkies have problems eating when they get to their new homes because they are not comfortable with their new space and haven't gotten acquianted with yet. Probably, because they are stressed out from feeling out of place because they don't know where "home" is yet. Don't take my word for it though, I am no doctor! Kennel cough can be treated though, but usually I think that means that your Yorkie may have come from a puppymill because if Pet Company is a petstore (and with the name and the amount you paid for your dog, it sure seems like a petstore), than most likely your puppy came from the mill. Just take her to the vet and I'm sure she'll be okay! |

WOW that is a lot of difference (pricewise). If only I had known beforehand! Yes, Pet Company is a petstore here in NJ, not sure if it's in any other state. ![]() | |

| ![]() HI there, welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new addition - what a beautiful family ![]() As far as eating goes, it seems that a lot of Yorkies are picky eaters. Mine certainly was when we brought her home. The magic trick for me, was to pour the tiniest bit of water on her food, then put it in the microwave for 10 seconds. She devours it every time. Let us know what your vet says, it also sounds to me like she may have kennel cough, which is very treatable.

| ![]() Good idea to take her to a vet. You should get some wet food and see if she'll eat it. I used Pedigree Little Champions chicken and gravy. It comes in little packets. You could try to heat it for a few seconds in the microwave to see if she'll eat it. If not, I would get some Nutrical from the local pet supply store and give her some of that to prevent her blood sugar from dropping. My yorkie had a cough and I would just comfort him and massage his neck while he was coughing. It seemed to calm him down. Good luck with your baby. Hopefully the vet can help. Try to stick the bill to Pet Company if you can.

| ![]() That's a really tough call. She is not in danger if it's Kennel Cough. Your vet will give you something for that. If it were my puppy I couldn't return her. I woul say just love her and chalk it up to a learning experience. Hope this helps. |

| ![]() It could be reverse sneezing which is common in yorkies. I would take her to the vet though to rule out kennel cough. Your vet should really know if there are eating problems. Alot of times they have special foods which can attract a yorkie to eat. My vet had one he said was like pudding for a dog. Anyway congratulations and good luck with your new puppy.

| ![]() thank you for the kind words, help, and support! What was i thinking for thinking about returning her! My girlfriend would have a fit if i bring that up! She loves her soooo much, and so do I. You are right, it is a learning experience. Also, reason being that we decided to go through a pet store was because of their warranty, which we believe is pretty good. Anyways, yeah we will bring her to the vet tonight at 6pm. This first visit to the vet is a free visit that the pet store gives all new owners. I will keep you all posted on what happens. In the meanwhile, any ideas about her always BITING everything she sees? even my fingers! lol literally everything she is biting! i hope this is nothing serious. I really want to teach her tricks already! but she won't listen since she is too busy chewing on things! I cant even teach her to sit down ![]() |

DO NOT take her to the vet that the pet store is paying for. They are NOT going to tell you if there is something wrong with her. I would go to a local vet that does not have a biased opinion. The pet store's vet will likely lie to you about her condition.

| ![]() Tell her no bite when she bites your fingers and hand her a chew toy or a small stuffed animal. My pup has a small stuffed dog and we always put it in his mouth when he starts to bite. I don't know if this is common but my pup has gotten better about not chewing as he as gotten alittle older.

| ![]() Yes, the biting is normal, she's probably teething, some of her teeth will fall out soon, so don't worry. Get her lots of toys and chewy things for dogs to chew on, I bought Pita some baby teething rings ( the solid ones) she likes those too. Pita had a cough when I got her a couple of months ago, and she still coughs occasionally, my vet says the kennel cough is a pain to get rid of but it's not life threatening, just annoying. She's adorable! Congratulations! |

| ![]() I with Kristy, do not take her to the vet the petshop is paying for. A friend of mine did this and of course, they found nothing wrong with her puppy, a few days later she had to take ber puppy to her private vet and found out she had bronchites and some stomach virus.. ![]() |

| ![]() Hi Fred, Try hand feeding your baby. Do you have some bits of ham or beef, tiny bits!! Or canned dog food? If you already have vet appt, keep it, its free.........and if you cant get into another vet immediately then this vet appt is better then none. Sounds like possible kennel cough, most of the time it is a benign condition and is viral and runs its course, but its possible it could be bacterial, and in those circumstances it is best an appropriate antibiotic is prescribed just to be safe. When you go to the vet, tell them what you expect, dont let them call all the shots, doesnt mean you are rude , just educated, and if you act like you know what you are talking about you are more likely to get your puppy better care. Does your puppy have diarrhea? Or normal stools? This is extremely important too. Good luck to you and keep us posted. Welcome to Yorkie talk! |
