Had a big scare tonight...

So my less than attentive boyfriend ( men ) called me tonight as I was on my way to work to tell me to hurry home because "he does not know what happened but Rudi is puking blood". So I hysterically rush home crying thinking Rudi is like dying and I get here to find Josh already having cleaned up Rudi's puke and Rudi acting like nothing happened and prancing around like a champ... of course I scoop Rudi up and rush him to the vet thinking something terrible is wrong. After an ER visit with our family vet he found nothing wrong and sent Rudi and I home telling me to watch him, feed a bland diet, and call him if anything worsens or changes. So feeling confused I head back home not convinced at all that Rudi is ok I start considering calling our secondary vet. When I get home my boyfriend then tells me "well I don't know it may not have been blood there was just some pink in it" so I start looking around trying to consider if I have given him anything that could have caused either pink saliva or something of that nature. I finally could not come up with any answers so I left to go to work and told Josh to watch Rudi closely and not give him any water or food for right now (was afraid if it was something that he could dehydrate). So I get to work and I am just getting settled in when I get a text message from josh saying "no worries it was just a starburst". Come to find out Josh thought it would be a good idea to stuff his roll of starburst down into the crease of our sectional and Rudi found them and stole one. I have been keeping all junk food out of the house trying to eat healthier and josh is the junk food king... also he is a 27 year old third grader He is such an smart guy.... 2 college degrees.... still a giant kid in so many ways. Anyway back on subject Rudi is acting fine no more puking and has since drank some water and ate a few bites of chicken with no ill effects. Should I be concerned??? Any reason to call another vet? He is pottying like normal and no more upset belly it seems and is extremely playful like always... I just am concerned because just the idea that it COULD have been blood scares me to death but family vet says he is fine... granted he is an older vet but has never steered me wrong at any time and always refers elsewhere if he feels like he does not have enough experience in a certain area. I trust my vet and my gut says nothing is wrong but... thats my baby and I just don't want to put him in any danger at all. This all happened about 5pm this afternoon and its now 1:30am here. Rudi ate and drank for the first time since the incedent at about 11pm.

Poor Rudi and you! What a terrible scare.

It sounds like Rudi threw up the Starburst, so there shouldn't be any problem. Watch him closely over the next 24-48 hours.

Sorry you were given such a scare. All the sugar in the starburst probably upset his little tummy, (You seem like you trust your vet and your insticts are telling you things are ok.)sounds like Rudi is going to be okay. Hope your boyfriend learns to keep things out of Rudi's reach so you don't get any more scares.

I think after tonight Josh will be much more careful. It scared him a lot. He loves Rudi to death and I think if nothing else it showed him how easy something can happen. He's never really had a extremely small dog before Rudi and I guess just did not understand how fragile they can be in situations like this. He has been watching him like a hawk ever since commenting on every move the poor thing makes lol hes being a little mother hen now.

Now that you know what it was, you can call the vet in the morning and ask for advice. You can ask if anything in the candy is particularly harmful to the pups.

I agree, I would call the vet. Do you have an emergency center to call to ask a question? The one by me will answer questions over the phone. Glad he doing better.

Be very careful with any kind of sugarless gum, candy or food. Xylitol sweetner can be deadly...

Kjc: wow thank you so much for telling me that I had no idea! I don't myself have them around but at family members houses they do.

Mom to hot rod - there is a phone service to call and have someone contact our vet in case of an emergency which is what I did but I don't know of an actual like 24u hour er vet in our area at all so there is not really a line to call and ask questions.

The vet however is supposed to call by 10 this morning to check on our little guy anyway though so I will ask him then. Rudi is still doing great and acting like nothing happened. He went out this morning and pottied like always and then came in and wanted his cuddle time mainly I am so relieved that as of right now at least it seems he is okay. Very scary night. It had me worried sick all night at work. We are so lucky to have our family vet though. He is getting up towards retirement and his son now works in the office more than he does but he really cares about the animals and anytime I have ever needed him whether for a stray or a pet he has always rushed to the office no matter what. Anytime I have ever found a stray and brought it in for care he doesn't charge. Such a sweet man. I can not count the times over the years that he has taken our (since passed on) family pets home with him and called in the middle of the night with a change for us. He really is an untypical vet for our area. Most older vets in our area are just old school farmer mentality vets. There are 2 offices that are not this way so things are starting to change. Sorry for the book I am just feeling all around very thankful this Sunday morning.

I'm sure he'll be fine. I couldn't tell you how many times the dogs have gotten into my kids' candy. At least your boyfriend knows for the future to keep it out of reach of the dog.
