I dread nail trimming days

. Reeses hates the spring and pop noise my clippers makes. We got through it today with a lot of belly rubs in between.
What kind of trimmers do you recommend?

The ones that my groomed uses when I take my dogs there to have their nails trimmed! ;-)

We use the PediI feel safer using that---of course it takes two of us to do it!

Maci's nails are quite long, and the quick has grown long too... my quesiton is... how can I trim the down to a more normal length, or is that necessary as long as I keep them down from now on.
Do I just cut them and use the Kwik Stop she came with, and let it heal and let the quick draw back, or just maintain them now at this current length?

I wouldn't purposefully cut into the quick. That'll just hurt & make her/him more afraid & fighting the next time. What works good for me, I get out some treats she likes a lot & cut it into several small pieces. Trim just the very tip of a nail, give her the treat, and repeat the process. They eventually learn nail trimmings aren't a bad deal after all. Trimming only the tip helps keep from hurting them & also the more frequent repitition makes it more normal. At first you could do front feet one day, back feet the next day. Or even one foot a day until they aren't so afraid & fighting it. I don't know if it's true, but I read that if you keep them trimmed more often the quick quits growing so long.

No do not purposely cut them into the quick it will hurt her. I dont know much about nails because I am terrified to hurt Callie so I let my groomer do it but I do know it hurts if it gets cut into the quick.

That's what i was thinking... It'll jus hurt her so I'll just make sure not to let them get longer! She came with full grooming supplies so might as well start putting them to use!

We need breaks and cookies just to get through one paw. I end up with scratches on my face, and a miserable puppy. I hate it.

Cody's nails got long too. The groomer told me that if I wanted to trim them to just take off a tiny tip. They said if I did that more often, the quick would shorten so his nails could be cut shorter.

Of course, even taking off a tiny tip is a "job"!

I didn't know that if I trimmed more often the quick would shorten.

I have to take lots of breaks with Resses too. After I trim them with the clippers, I'm going to try to file them when he's sitting on my lap in the evenings. They get sharp.

I use Millers Forge - just a general cutter. Don't like the guillotene type at all. I don't like the idea of a dremmel either.

My pups pull their feet away, so they get held tighter. I won't pay $10-$15 a month, esp. times 2 just to get nails done, but that's me.

What about trying to go quickly so they don't have to sit still for long? Just tip them until you get used to doing it and are less concerned about going too far (which is not a big deal, btw).

I just googled the Miller Forge Clippers. Great reviews and price. Thanks, bc I haven't heard of that brand. I tried the dremel before and Reese wouldn't even let me hold his paw. I didn't force the issue, didn't want to ruin the experience by him not wanting me to touch his paws at all.

That's what I do. Kaji is more scared of the clipper than he is with the dremel. If I don't file his nails after trimming, he'll scratch through my stockings, and scratch up everyone without meaning too.

I take Sasha to work with me and have my co-workers use the dremmel tool. It just works the best in my opinion and seems to last a lot longer to. Her nails used to be extremely long as well as her quicks. I started bringing her to work with me once every 2 weeks (I work at a pet store) to keep up with it and her nails are SO much better now. I'd do them myself but I'm too nervous to and I'm pretty sure she feeds off of that because when my co-workers do her nails, she does pretty well.
