I wouldn't purposefully cut into the quick. That'll just hurt & make her/him more afraid & fighting the next time. What works good for me, I get out some treats she likes a lot & cut it into several small pieces. Trim just the very tip of a nail, give her the treat, and repeat the process. They eventually learn nail trimmings aren't a bad deal after all. Trimming only the tip helps keep from hurting them & also the more frequent repitition makes it more normal. At first you could do front feet one day, back feet the next day. Or even one foot a day until they aren't so afraid & fighting it. I don't know if it's true, but I read that if you keep them trimmed more often the quick quits growing so long.
