| ![]() What type of questions should I be asking my vet for Petey's 1st visit?? These are the ones I have so far...Does he need a vitamin? Should I keep Nutrical on hand for hypoglycemia? How will I know if he becomes hypoglycemic? How much "should" he be eating/drinking? (asking cuz he doesn't eat/drink very much) Do I need to clean his teeth? How often? What to use? Does he need dewormer? How often? By vet or me? What should I do for flea/tick control? (we live in a VERY rural area, surrounded by fields/trees) Anything else???? |

| ![]() I could/could have asked the breeder, but these are things I didn't think of when we picked him up. I didn't know if there is something I am not thinking of. Thanks for the reply. |

| ![]() Sorry, I forgot this. If you are not planning on breeding, you might also ask about neutering. Age, cost, etc.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | ![]() I'm not sure if you saw this sticky, but it will help answer some of your questions while you are waiting for your first visit. It may also trigger off some other questions for you to ask: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...w-parents.html There's a sticky some where on hypoglycemia. Let me look around for it.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | ![]() Hmmm... I could have sworn we had a hypoglycemia sticky. But this is a great explanation of the signs/symptoms, treatment and prevention of hypoglycemia. It's even the site of one of the breeders here on the board! Yorkies of Walnut Hill - Yorkie Hypoglycemia - Yorkie Low Blood Sugar - Yorkie Sugar Shock - Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

I'm not sure how old your pup is but at 16wks old it is recommended that they have a BAT test done, and then again at 6mths old. This will help to show if there is a problem with the liver - as you know Liver Shunt is one of the health risks associated with Yorkies. So ask your vet how familiar he is with this test, Dr Jean Dodd also has full explanation on the proper way to do the test. I know it seems like a lot, but just add this to your list when you go. As you live in a very rural area, consider if you haven't already preparing a first aid kit for your dog ( again here on Yorkie Talk there is a stickie on that). You probably know best what types of critters you have out there, but with our small Yorkies, we need to be vigilant, birds of prey, coyotes, even raccoons, can kill and or damage seriously our dogs. There are posts are here about just those things. Finally but certainly not least congrats on your new pup ![]()

| ![]() Do you know what shots your puppy has had? The vet will want to know his vaccination history, also they will need his date of birth. Be sure to not let the pup on the floor at the vets. You will need to use precautions to prevent him being exposed to parvo if it is a problem in you area. If your puppy needs vaccinations I would recommend not giving the lepto shot. Also make sure the vet does not give a rabies shot the same time as the other vaccinations. The rabies shot should be given alone. I also recommend you request the vet to do a fecal exam on the pup to check for worms, coccida and giardia. Good luck to you and your baby. I hope he gets a good checkup. |
