If a dog is allergic to beef, wouldn't they also be allergic to beef cartilage?
Since the protein is the allergen, if cartilage contains protein, I would think so.
So, is cartilage protein?

I know very little about allergies, but I googled the question 'Is cartilage protein?' and several answers popped up referring to cartilage proteins. So I would assume cartilage contains protein.

I have the same question about chicken. Alexander is allergic to chicken but he can eat products containing eggs. ???

I think eggs and chicken are different but couldn't even begin to explain why.
I know if a dog is allergic to chicken, they can usually tolerate chicken fat.

I've been giving Ellie Cosequin for the longest time and just today I see a revised ingredient list and one of the things in it is derived from bovine cartilage. We have reason to believe that Ellie is allergic to beef, so now I don't know what to do.

She has taken the regular capsules for well over a year; but she is always constantly itchy, so I have no idea if it's related. I had looked into the chewables before, but they contain garlic which I would do if I can avoid it. Never saw the liquid before. Hmmm. It's like you have to ask about every single little thing before using a product and once a week thereafter to make sure they haven't changed anything.

Well, I could have sworn I saw a Cosequin liquid when I went to buy mine the other day. I've just done a couple of searches for it online & nothing. I must be losing my mind.

Like if corn bothers a dog, would Zea Mays (corn silk) - I never got a clear answer on that from Orijen.

And why are some dog allergic to all "feather foods": - like chicken, duck, turkey etc? Which actual substance IS IT?

There are three different types of cartilage used in the body. However, all contain the fibrous collagen, which is protein based. As for the mircobiology of exactly how this protein is related to the protein in the "meat", is another field, sorry with that I cannot help.

I think it is probably better to stop it for now until the vet says what to do or tells me to decide. ha.
