Eating poop!

Not Sapphire , my uncle's dog. Max is a one year old, 20ish pound, Lhasa Apso/Yorkie mix. He likes to eat his poop... They gave him a pill to stop him, and that works. But they have to ALWAYS give it to him. I suggested the pineapple, and Max and Bailey (their 3 year old Shih-Tzu) just love to eat it. But, he still eats the poop... Not only does he eat it, though, he likes to pick it up and carry it around their house before he eats it... Any suggestions on what they could do? I was going to suggest that they needed to give the pineapple time to digest in his system , but they gave it to him and even after a few days, he was still eating it... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard that getting MSG works too. I think that is the main ingredient in those powders you can buy for that.

Wookie did that when he was still having accidents in the house. The powders didn't help. I finally realized that he was doing it to hide the evidence of having an accident. Once he finally got completely trained to go outside he didn't touch it anymore. He won't mess with it all outside. Now he DID have an accident in the house last month when the ground was covered with ice and he wouldn't go to the bathroom outside. He didn't eat it, but he took it and hid it under the bed in the guest room!! LOL

Tricksie is just the opposite, if she poops and tiny bit gets stuck on her she gets so embarrased and hides until I clean her.

You could try Solid Gold's S.E.P. (Stop Eating Poop). When I fed kibble and Wylie went through a poop-eating stage, I used this and it stopped it within a couple days. I also later changed to a more digestable food with little grain. I now feed raw.

Oh my! My uncle told me today that Max doesn't eat his poop... He eats Bailey's poop! Maybe Bailey should be the one eating more pineapple? What do you do if he eats another dog's poop, but not his own?

Hi, there is a powder called Forbid, that you sprinkle over their food for about 3 days and its supposed to make the poo taste unpleasant, ask the vet.

Baby Chloe went through a stage where she did this. Funny story.
I was telling the Vet about it.
She asked "Does she eat her own, or the other dog's?"
I said "both."
The Vet says "so she is not discerning?"
I said " I thought we established that when I told you she ate poop."

Just kidding, but that is what I WANTED to say. We got Forbid from the vet and used SEP as recommended by Wylie's mom. Baby Chloe stopped.

You can also try pumpkin or spinach too. It does take a few days for the poop eating to stop but it really does work. Anyone that says it doesn't is either not giving enough quantity or time for it to work its way through their system. The one thing that you have to do first is make sure that your the amount that you are feeding is sufficiant enough to change the taste. Then you need to give it a few days to actually work. I have given this advice to people many times and they will come back the next day and say that it doesn't work. It will take a little time. Nothing is immediate no matter what you do in life~including eating poop! I would also have to agree with Wylies Mom that a food lower in grains will also help. If you look in this section their is also another pretty long thread about poop eating. Take a look at that too. There is other good advice too AND Nancy1999 gives a good explanation as to why they stop eating it. I have also read that some times puppies do this because they saw their mom doing it when they were really small to clean up their messes. I found that very interesting too.

Hi my Yorkie hasn't got this problem but Archie, my Cairn has. It's not a problem with him trying to eat his or strange dogs but he wants to eat our other dogs poop. I did ask a dog trainer and he just said get it up straight away (no I would never have thought of that one....) Obviously we do try and clean it up straight away but I've had to keep Archie on a lead if I'm letting him outside in the garden and check all the time in case there is anything. I'd love to be able to let him out like the others without having to worry about it.

I'll try the pineapple thing with the other dogs.

As it's just our other dogs that he has the problem with I've read the problem can sometimes be protecting the pack and hiding the scent of the pack.

Sometimes the answers that you get make your head want to spin No fooling you should pick it up but that isn't stopping the poop eating. I think since your issue is eating everyone else's poop in your house I would try the pumpkin mixed into their food. Use straight canned pumpkin in all of their food. Just mix about a tablespoon into each of their food bowls and add a little warm water just enough to make a very thick gravy. This will probably a cheaper and easier solution for you because yours is eating the other dogs poop. You can even do the pineapple too. Maybe something like pumpkin in their morning bowls and a piece or two of pineapple during the day.

Sorry that comment was my bit of sarcasm aimed at the dog trainer with that was all he came up with all his supposed expertise and it was something we already did. I live in the UK and as far as I know I've only ever seen pumpkins available at around October time - I've never seen canned pumpkin available here unless anyone in the UK can tell me different. This is my first time posting, and i just so happened to come across this thread. My problem is that my baby gets in the cats litter box and tries to eat the cats poop. I usually catch him, but sometimes he has poop breath. Is there anything I can put in the cat's food?

I feel better now that I am not the only one. LOL. My Toby's been eating poop and today I smelled that he has pooped somewhere but I couldnt even find the poop! I dont wanna know where the poop went.
