Let's say that a dog has been lost and has a microship. Someone has found the dog and thinks that the dog my have a chip and wants to bring it to a vet to be scanned.

Question is - Is there a charge for scanning the dog (whether or not they find a chip), and does the finder have to pay for it?

I was just wondering because if there is charge, alot of people might not be so willing to get it scanned if it's going to cost them money.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

There is no charge. I've found a dog on the street before, brought it into the shelter, they scanned it and there was a chip. They called its owners and the dog went home! I'm sure the vet is the same thing.

Good question. My dogs are both chipped. The vet didnt say there was a charge but I dont know for sure.

I also wonder if humane societies and pounds have the scanner. Does anyone know? I just think people that find strays would more likely take them to one of those instead of a vet.

As far as I know and I'm in Canada so it may be different in your coutry.

The vets and humane societies (maybe not small small towns but most towns) have scanners. There is no charge, this makes sense because it's usually only a few hours from the time the dog is picked up until the time the dog is home again, thus preventing the dog needing shelter, medical costs or food at the humane society. Saving money all around.

There are from what I know 2 different scanner systems. I think on is North American and one is Great Britian or something like that... but it's a fairly safe bet if you loose your dog in Ontario and he's found in Buffalo, if he's microchipped they'll be able to get him back to you.

I was not charged anything for bringing the dog in. But got rewarded by knowing that it went home!

This thread has just got me to thinking....
Okay, so lets say someone lost their puppy and someone decided to keep it for themselves.(like a stolen dog) They bring it to the vet as their very own.. Scanning would not be done because the vet thinks the rightful owner has the dog right? I mean unless the person bringing in the dog is truely honest there would be no point to scan.. I dont know just curious...

My dog checked my puppy when I brought him in for his first check up. I don't know if they all do as a security measure or not.

When I brought Bella in for her first initial exam the night I got her, they also asked me a bunch of questions likes where I got her from, was it a breeder, etc. They took her away for a few mins. I always thought it was so they can scan her to make sure she didn't have a chip. They did the same thing when I took my parent's new dog in for his initial exam two years ago. Maybe they do scan them when they meet a new dog as a patient just to make sure our story checks out but they don't tell us because they don't want to offend us? Also, I would like to think that if a vet gets notice and posters re a stolen or lost pet and one fitting that description show up at their office, they'd do a scan just in case.

this is such a good topic. i have 5 of my dogs chipped now and i've always wondered what if they were lost and someone kept the dog and took it to the vet, would the vet actually scan the dog?? vets are so different and who knows if they would or not. its kind of scary to think about. we pay for this service to protect our babies and we have no way of knowing if a vet would actually scan our pets if they were to change hands.

Yes, that's right. The chip is only good if the people who find the dog are honest and want to give the dog back, or if the vet double checks to see if the people match the real owners. But not very many vets do that, even though it should be mandatory. So it's like with the chip you only have 50/50 chance of getting your dog back.

The first time I took the boys to my vet and the humane society they scanned them for microchips. Funny, cause one visit I was there to get them chipped LOL.
