Ellie went to the vet again (eyes update).

I'm so bummed.
Ellie had a heartworm test today (negative! ) and I was going to keep her on Interceptor because she does so well with it. The vet realized (thank God she did ) that Interceptor is beef flavored. Ellie is allergic to beef, so she can no longer have it. I will not use Revolution or Advantage Multi, so the choice is Heartgard (not Heartgard Plus). I am soooo hoping she doesn't react to it.

The vet also looked at her runny eyes again. Of course they didn't smell bad when I needed them to. She doesn't know what is causing it (possibly antibiotics depleting flora..yeast isn't out of the question). Runny eyes do smell sometimes (hard to say if it is normal) but this is not normal for Ellie and something doesn't seem right. So we will use saline or eye wash for now and go from there. The vet did say something about Angel Eyes getting good reviews but I didn't want to use it because it is a low grade antibiotic and it can elevate ALTs (now that I think of it I think it is beef product anyway). Anyway, she agreed that it wasn't something she'd want to use either and any medicine giving low grade is questionable.

And of course her eyes didn't stink when she was at the vet's office!! That's how it goes, don't you know?? LOL
Anyway, it sounds like she's doing great. Heartguard (the chewable kind) is also beef flavored, but not if you get the kind that they swallow in pill form.

Yep on the Angel Eyes. I think it contains Tylosin - which can also help w/ ibd/colitis (Tylan Powder) - yep, tried it w/ Marcel last year, to no avail; but it has worked miracles for others. Good thing you caught that. I wonder what you could do, without side effects, for the "possible" yeast....super-duper probiotic? Bene-bac for a week? Did your vet have any ideas there?

I think the Heartgard is the pill that they swallow. The vet is so careful because she doesn't want to treat another reaction. I am still so unhappy about this. I really prefer Interceptor. Too bad for me.

It seemed like they barely smelled at at 'til she finished the metronidazole. Then they were gross on and off for a couple days and now it isn't too bad. As for what we are going to do, the vet said something about looking in her opthalmology books (I'm pretty sure Ellie is one of her most difficult patients). And next time it starts to smell really bad, she has to go back to the vet. So, no real plans for now except maybe washing them with saline or eye wash. She isn't in danger, so we will just watch.

I could probably supplement with whatever I want to and mgiht but I would like to wait a few weeks and see if the smell will come back that strong. That way maybe I can get a diagnosis. Otherwise, I mgiht supplement to take away the little bit of a smell that is there. Whatever it is, it will have to be safe for her liver and pancreas and hopefully not produce any kind of excessive urination.

Did you notice the probiotic that they're recommending on the liver shunt group? If not, you might go over there and check it out. If you need probiotics,this might be the one for you...
