I'm very proud of Jacky, because he can hold it in for the whole night since he was 5 months old. In fact for 11.5 hrs

All puppies should not have free roam around the house, when did your puppy get free roam of the house? When did you yorkie stopped chewing things hes not supposed to? When did it stop urinating while playin on carpets?

Mine just turned 5 mos old, she has been pee pad trained for quite a few weeks, although, she still likes to poop about 3 feet from the pee pad, but, at least gets to the laundry room to go..She has free roam of the house, up to the kitchen, like the other 3..I don't let any of them on my new carpet(even the 10 year old)..They stay in the family room/laundry room/kitchen, but, just today, the little one started chewing on my molding.... So, I wouldn't give him free roam unless you're right there with him, they will chew usually up until they're 1 year of age..

Hmm, we close off the bedrooms, so the 2 have access to the dining room, living room, hallways and entry way. While in training Zander was very good about not having accidents, in a yr. I would say he had 4 and they were spread apart, mainly my fault for being too busy to get that he was wanting outside. However, regardless of how efficient he was with his potty habits, I didn't let my guard down & watched him and took him outside even when he didn't ask to go. He is now close to two years old and he has been accident free. Jazzie was a quick learner, she knows to go to the back door and smack the bells to let me know she has to go outside to pipi, I still keep a watchful eye on her, its all about the treats for her. I did actually read that it can take up to 2 years of consistent training to truly trust them on their own. Perhaps others may have an opinion related to that.

It's sort of like raising kids You give them a little freedom at a time and see how they handle it. If they abuse the freedom, you reign them in and cut their free space back down. if they do well, you trust them more.

O just wanted to make a comment about my yorkie being able to hold it in for 11.5 hrs. I know it ain't the healthiest thing to do, so it was just a one time thing, to kinda test him.

We usually let him go every 8 hrs.

theres 3 floors in my house including the basement, is it necessary to close off the stairs? Jacky is afraid to go down the stairs so I can probably leave the stairs to the basement open.

Is it possible to form an invisible fence? My kitchen is pretty open and has 3 ways to get in, is there a way to prevent him from going to the kitchen? Its kinda dirty I mean even I wear slippers on the kitchen floor.

My baby is 10 mo's old and she's doing GREAT Recently gave her free roam of the house and she's done so good. She did have a relapse, but she recovered and is making mommy proud. Mind you we live in a townhome and she has to go downstairs (washroom) to use the pad - with a rare accident. And I really think she does it out of spite..lol. I brought her to work with me yesterday and she did great! Didnt piddle out of excitiment not once when my co-workers approached her. And that's quite an improvement compared to three months ago...

My boys are 2.5 years old and they STILL pee on the floors they only get roam of the house when I am home. They do sleep through the night with no accidents though and have since they were 4 months old. Ive had a 'phew that was pure luck' moments with things they have chewed while I was not in the room (like my laptop cord that was plugged in) and the chewing lasted about 4 months. About 4 months to 8 months they chewed nonstop! My best advice on that one is during this stage, put them in an indoor pen, this will save your walls and baseboards and the bottoms of your cabinets. Mine chewed all those things up, holes in my walls... uuggghhh wish I thought of the indoor PEN, not just gating them into a room to minimize damage. Good luck!

You need to let him go every 2 hours when you are home. 8 hours is stilll way too long. I work full time so my boys are gated into the kitchen but they have pee pads and they use them. I can't expect them to hold it for 8 hours.

Baby gates are always good for creating barriers. Sophie is almost 6 mths. old. We have only had her for 1 mth, and before she was with us, I think she was pee pad trained. She hadn't been taught to potty outside anyways. As soon as I got her, I started taking her outside to potty. I close off the doors to our rooms and bathrooms, and she has free reign of the living room, hall, dining room and kitchen. I make sure to take her outside about every 2-3 hrs., I say "go potty", and I don't take her back in until she at least squats and TRIES to pee. It's cold here, so she learned quickly to run out, do her business, and run back inside. I really think that consistency is key, and PREVENTING accidents from happening. Take them out to potty before they have an accident inside. My miniature dachshund is trained to ring bells when she wants to go outside, so we're working on this with Sophie as well. Every time we take her out, we ring the bells and say "outside", then we go out. Before long they can tell you when they need to go out by ringing the bells, which is very convenient, and CUTE!!

I agree.... that's such a sad test. What did you do, time him until he peed all over himself? Such a young puppy should be taken out to potty every 2-4 hrs. 8 hrs. is way too long, and 11.5 hrs. is just painful.

Mine only have free roam when iam home, My 5mth old is still waking me up in the middle of the night, thats ok, i dont mind, he will sleep all night like his brothers sooner or later but 8 hrs is a long time, I dont let mine hold it for more then 6, good luck.

I simply don't believe that you guys would wake up every 2 hrs during the night to let him go to the washroom.

In fact I brought my yorkie to the washroom as soon as he barked (during the 11.5 hrs) I was just sleepin, i didn't intentionally stop him from going.
