Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Sign Up For Humane Efforts to Protect Cats {This is just appalling to me...for a gov't agency, without ANY permission at all, to threaten to go around killing feral cats.} FROM Best Friends Animal Sanctuary: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continues its anti-cat campaign "Dear Members and Friends, Since 2010, Best Friends Animal Society has been monitoring U.S. government agencies to determine if any official policy about free-roaming cats is being considered. Members may recall our 2011 blog post and action alert urging the director of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) to prohibit key personnel from promoting an unauthorized and misguided anti-cat policy. Recently, USFWS staff submitted a letter, on official letterhead, to policymakers in Escambia County, Florida, claiming that the “agency strongly opposes free-roaming, domestic or feral cats” and trap/neuter/return (TNR) programs. The letter also threatened possible legal action if the county does not “eliminate free-ranging feral cats.” As a result, elected officials removed the community cat program discussion from the Board of County Commissioners’ meeting agenda at the last minute. This is not an isolated incident. USFWS has repeatedly covertly promoted the killing of cats, while insisting publicly that the agency has no official position on the issue. The promotion of an unsanctioned policy is a violation of the public’s trust. Any official policy requires legal notice informing the public that the policy is being proposed and inviting public input, commentary and discussion — a process essential to democratic government. Unless and until the agency actually adopts an official policy, USFWS should not be injecting itself into local affairs to advocate for lethal roundups. Please click here to take action and use Best Friends' action alert to speak out against this violation of the public’s trust, and help protect the lives of cats."

| Thank you for posting. I sent in my letter. This is horrible! I have several cats that I have spayed and neutered and released on my property. I wish people would take care of their animals so this wouldn't happen. Because of negligent people I now have 15 cats that I am taking care of that are/were not mine and that is just at home. We are also feeding a wild mom and her 5 kittens at our shop in Houston. I cannot turn a blind eye to a hungry animal of any kind but I also cannot afford to continue to spay and neuter them all. More needs to be done to convince pet owners to spay and neuter. It seems that some people just don't care.

| Thank you but I am not special I just have a big heart when it comes to animals especially those that are homeless and hungry. I am a member of a rescue group but we mostly deal with dogs. I am pushing for cats as well but it is so hard to find good homes for them and there are so many out there. I will try to attach a photo of a little female that found us about 3 mos. ago. She was pregnant and starving. She had her kittens on our property but in brush where I could not get to them. They are about 2 1/2 mos. old now and very wild so I have been unsuccessful in capturing them. I will keep trying! Skinny was spayed 3 weeks ago and only weighed 7 lbs. when I took her to the vet. She is gaining weight and such a sweet little thing. I truly believe that she was some ones kitten but I will never know where she came from. I live in the country and it seems to be a dumping ground for animals. The closest shelter is a kill shelter and I cannot do that.

Skinny looks just adorable, very pretty colors! So glad you're helping her and I wish you the best of luck with the little kittens.

| Joyce, Houston has a TNR program! I am sure you can use it for the cats at your shop! BARC :: Feral Cat TNR Program :: Feral Cat TNR

| Hundreds of cats take over Tonawanda Island | wivb.com This group asked for $1000...due to the overwhelming response they have gotten, all the cats will be spayed/neutered and the population on the island can be controlled. It only takes one person to make a difference........ This is my neighborhood, by the way!

Thank you! I am trying to get them to come out and do the trapping since I am not in Houston everyday. Bad neighborhood as you know and most people in that area do not care. Sad!

| Yeah, I might be afraid to trap because something could happen to them if no one is around. Maybe if you try during the day when you are there? As for getting someone to come out, just seeing all the homeless animals in Houston tells me it is not highly likely. Terrible.
