I couldn't watch the video, either. I read the description, and that was enough to absolutely sicken me. It doesn't surprise me about China - their human rights are deplorable, so why would they treat animals any better than they treat ppl? I cannot fathom the deaths these poor animals are forced to bear. I also think we need to hit China in its pocketbook. As I said before (you all are probaby as tired of hearing it as my family, sorry), I could not believe China was chosen to host the Olympics - a symbol of worldwide comradship in athletics, as well as a HUGE booster of an economy! Just bc China can produce a cheaper product due to poor manufacturing standards, use of inferior (sometimes unsafe) materials, human rights violations, and cruelty to animals does not mean we should purchase these products.

Okay, I'll step down off the soap box before I fall off.

All I can say is wow...I can't believe anyone could be a part of this. There is no reason for the animals to suffer the way they are, is it so hard to humanely put down an animal before you take its fur or meat?

Wealth doesn't produce these conditions, poverty does. Hitting China in the "pocketbook" will only make things worse, not better. That's just my opinion. Also, every country that is currently industrialized went through a period of poor manufacturing conditions/child labor the United States and all of Europe being prime examples of that. We can't force any country into changing their labor laws just like nobody forced us too. China is industrializing, it is not a developed country yet. Once the country has industrialized, then they will address labor laws...just like we did.

I think in a broad overview, you are correct. However, there are other factors other than industrialization that govern how ppl are treated. Regimes in power also dictate how much of the wealth from the industrialization reaches the everyday person, how much "westernilization" they allow "in", etc. So far, China's regime has been resistant to the addressing of human rights. The Soviet Union, although it rose to a "super power" status, was very stiffling to its everyday ppl, continuing to be guilty of human rights violations and poor manufacturing standards, until its ultimate demise - partly due to economic collapse bc of its 10 year war with Afghanistan.

The Soviet Union was only regarded as a super power due to its nuclear proliferation, not because it had any real economic growth. Either way, I just don't think boycotting Chinese products is the answer. Economic embargoes do not work.

Also, I hope you're not taking what I'm saying the wrong way. Animal abuse is deplorable...but I just think we should work on the animal abuse we have here at home (the US).

No, not at all. I overall agree w you about industrialization - I just think other factors play a part also. I guess the economic embargo discussion would be long. They have been effective in some situations. They have failed in others.

I do think the companies themselves do respond to boycotting their products. I do think boycotting certain products, both foreign and domestic, that are made on the backs of abuse animals will get companies' attention.

Yes, the success of an embargo depends on the ultimate goal. When I said they were unsuccessful I meant if the goal is to destroy a country's economy...that is when it is least likely to work especially if it is only unilaterally implemented. I also agree on boycotting only certain products. I'm not sure about it's success overseas (I haven't really followed that) but domestically I think it really does work.
