| I would like to add that local SPCAs are not the same as the ASPCA. The ASPCA is based in NYC and has a national reach. Local SPCAs are not affilated with them and are much like your local Humane Society not being affiliated with HSUS. Here's something about the ASPCA. Note that they received $85 million in donations in 2008. Pets Alive Blog ASPCA New York: Using your donations to murder animals HSUS, which takes in around $100 million annually, uses less than 2% of that money to help animals in shelters. Here's an analysis of their 2006 tax return. http://www.centennialsharpeiclub.org...ds%20money.pdf No doubt these groups do 'some' good. The question is...how much good should nearly $200 million (between them) annually do? It's my belief that most of their donations come from people thinking that they are helping companion animals. Just look at their ads on TV and other media soliciting donations. What other assumption could one reasonably make? In my mind, it's a breach of trust on the highest order. We should see much better results for the amount of money these 2 groups get.

| I don't know if I trust any of the city or county run shelters any more. I posted about a Yorkie on here a couple of months ago that was in the San Antonio shelter. They had his picture up for adoption and he was muddy, filthy and matted in the pic. According to the date on the pic he had already been there 5 days. I called about him and they said he wasn't ready to be adopted because he hadn't been bathed and evaluated yet. When I heard that I went ballistic and started yelling at eh guy and asking why he had been there that long in that condition. Then they guy, who I admit sounded like a young shelter worker so I felt bad later, said it was because the dog was vomiting. Then I went nuclear and reminded them what animal cruelty was and what they were supposed to be preventing. I told him I wanted the dog cleaned up and checked and I would find a way to come adopt it no matter it's age or health status. He said OK call tomorrow. I posted on here and called some other places in SA but when I called the next day they said the owner had come and claimed the dog. They told some of you that, too. I just know in my heart that wasn't true but what could I do? I'm hyperventilating now so I'll stop. |
