| CGC/Therapy test help Sadie has her CGC test next week as well as her initial temperment testing for Delta. Last week we ran through a practice test and she does everything great except one. She cannot contain herself when a friendly stranger approaches me to shake my hand and ignores her. She is a very friendly girl and wants to go to the evaluator. They are insisting that she not break her sit when they approach. She has a great down stay and actually last week did over a two minute stay with distractions such as dogs barking and class going on around her. She is not nearly as sound at a sit stay. We've decided that the only way that she is going to pass the friendly stranger approach is if I can get her sit stay solid enough that she won't break it when the evaluator approaches. Does anyone have any suggestions?? At this point in class we are no longer using treats since we can't use them for the test. I was thinking about asking the instructor to let me use treats tonight just for this one excercise. I know we have to get away from them but I thought that sense it isn't working right now, just to start from scratch and treat for success and slowly wean her from the treats over the next week. I'm really open to suggestions!! She should be able to pass her initial temperment testing for Delta the way she is but she definately will have to get this under control in time for the final Delta evaluation - whether she passes her CGC now or not.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yes I do. TAke her to a pet store or some other public environment. In the petstore, hopefully at a quiet time, explain to owner/clerk you are training your dog to sit stay. And yes use treats there to reward, particularly if she responds well to treats. Have stranger simply walk by you and dog in sit stay. Some distance away. If she ignores stranger reward. Don t have stranger stop at all - just ignore both of you. Then have stranger pause but look away turn there back. If she sit/stays reward. Then have stranger pause look at you , he doesn't speak, and then moves on If she sit stays reward. then have stranger pause look at you, say hello, and quickly walk past. She sit/stays reward. then have stranger pause, look, say hello, shake your hand, and leave. Reward for sit stay. It is breaking down the exercise in minute steps. You can start at home with sit stay for her dinner. Hope this helps. and best of luck

| Thanks Gail! That's kind of what I was thinking also. I'm not sure we can get it done by next week, but as long as we're ready for Delta I'll be ok. She can re-take the CGC later if we need to. She does sit/stay for meals. It took forever but we have finally gotten there. I have a lab that (bless her heart) will sit stay after I put her food down until I make the little one's food. She has an incredible stay. It just seems so much more difficult with my little ones. We've been practicing with my husband and she does great but of course he's old hat and not nearly as exciting as a stranger. I like the idea of taking her out in public and working on it in steps. I'm not so much going to worry about the one week time limit - and just work on it for the long term. Thanks again - I knew I could count on you! Karen

| My last Golden Lucky could not obtain his CGC. He would sit-stay and then do a scooting sit to get close to the evaluator- Technically he was still sitting. He would practice perfect and then would do the behavior at the evals. The 3rd time the evaluator told me that if he was a smaller dog I would have passed but you can easily see the behavior in 120 pound Golden.

| Sometimes the cutest things they do are the ones that are so hard to break. Sadie is a 4 1/2 pound Yorkie and it really is adorable when she dances on two legs to greet people but unfortunately it doesn't bode well in obedience testing! I'll bet Lucky was really cute doing it though!

| Sadie didn't pass her CGC this time but she was so close. She just couldn't keep her butt on the floor when the evaluator reached down to pet her. She didn't move, but she couldn't hold her sit till they actually started petting her. It took her a couple of tries to stay in a sit when they greeted me, but she did it. She came so far though that I know she can do it with some more work. The good news is that she did ace her temperament test for therapy. That was really more important because so much of that can't be trained - it's just in them or not. My goal is to have her ready to retest for CGC at the same time as her final Delta test.
