Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | New therapy dog in the family Woohoo, Jillie passed her Delta Society therapy dog test today, so I'll have TWO certified therapy dogs in the family! Whew, this one was TOUGH! The previous tester in our state was very easy-going on grading. If you did something wrong, she'd explain but she wouldn't necessarily fail you. Eddie passed twice easily. Well, she died, and two new testers got certified -- and they are sticklers for the rules. Not unfair -- they just give you little slack. The first test they conducted, they failed all 7 dogs who tested. Jillie took the test a couple months ago and did beautifully, I thought. Even better than Eddie. But they failed her for "excessive licking." As cute as I think it is, they don't want her licking uncontrollably in a hospital setting. So I taught her a no-lick command, and we tried again today. She passed! She only had one spot in the test where she struggled. Three people approached us being loud and wanted to pet her. I was carrying her, but I could tell they bothered her. Her tongue started darting out nervously and submissively. I just backed off for a second and gave her some space, asked the people to talk in quiet voices and approach us one at a time. Jillie relaxed, and obeyed the no lick command! Quite proud of my little 4-pound, 2-year-old girl!

| Congratulations, Jillie! You sure can't blame anyone for wanting to pet her!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh my, that is so funny failing for "excessive licking". I cracked up on that one, they should be so lucky to have a dog like that! Good for you for teaching her to control herself, she doesn't want hospital patients to think she's "easy". Congratulations Mike, that's really special that you have taken the time to teach your dogs this, any other breed and I would think "big deal", but I really think it's so much more difficult to teach independent Yorkies. I’m sure Eddie, Jillie and you will spread some real happiness!

| Congrats! See why I want to go learn at the master's side? Maybe you can help me with my uncontrollably scared wild child. You up for a challenge?

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Ok, Ok, send her here! If I can't train her, I'll just keep her and love on her! We've had good luck getting scared dogs to mellow out a big at meetups in a large fenced area. The extra space helps them to not feel trapped, and they gain confidence when they learn they can get along just fine with other dogs and people.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Mike a Big Huge Congrats to You and Jillie. Well done. So happy for you both! By the way I have a "Leaner", and at about 115-120 lbs that is a no no. If Magic likes you he wants to lean against you while you pet him. And on the "licking" got a chuckle on that one, but I guess I see their point of view too.
