| sewing machine for beginner Hi everyone! I was wondering if someone could suggest a decent and reasonably priced sewing machine for me as a beginner. I never sewed before so I would want to use the machine to learn on. Just looking to make some dog clothes and maybe quilts as well so doesn't need to be anything too fancy.

| I got a little Singer at a fabric store last year and paid $230.00 for it. It has 17 different stitches on it....nothing fancy, and that is probably more than I will ever need! I just wanted to put a little hem on my pants legs that I cut off, so I could hand sew a hem in them. Also used it to shorten curtain panels that did not come in the length I needed. Great little uncomplicated machine! |

| I have the Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118. Its a good basic machine. It has a very easy learning curve and makes excellent quality stitches on a variety of fabrics. It doesnt have fancy stitches though. You can buy cheaper singers that have more stitch style capabilities. It depends what you want the machine to do and how picky you are about the results. My Mum and my Nan both have Berninas, which spoiled me when it comes to stitch quality. I don't sew enough to justify that price-point, but want a similar quatilty stitch, which is how I ended up with the Husqvarna. Go to a store like JoAnn Fabrics. They will let you test various machines, so you can find one best for you. Sometimes little features you'll like better about one machine over another, like bobbin filling, reversing, threading. Little things, but you'll be doing them alot, so you want one your comfortable working with.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I agree a Brother Runway is a nice machine, I have one that I got from a garage sale for $40 and it is very nice. Nice variety of stitches very easy to use and very quiet. Not like my Kenmore from Sears that I have had for 18 yrs and love.

| I have had a lot of luck with older machines from yardsales. We find them much sturdier and better quality than an inexpensive machine bought new. Craigslist is a great place too! |

| My first machine is a Brother from Walmart, and was under $100, my mom gave it to me for my birthday. It came with a DVD to show you how to operate it and some basics. I had never sewn before and was tired of making all of my Rennaisance gowns by hand so it was a great gift!

| I bought one of the mid priced Project Runway machines made by Brother I am very happy with it, it was about $189.00 One of the things I like is that it comes with a DVD that shows you how to thread the machine, make bobbins, make button holes and use some other features. I would set up my laptop and play the DVD over and over again when doing something new, having the DVD has been a lifesaver and shortened the learning curve a lot. I am the type of person that can almost have a panic attack when reading a how to manual, so the DVD was a life saver. I would also take a basic sewing class at Joann's just so you understand things like bobbin tension, thread lengths, notching, interfacing, trimming hems, pressing hems, working with a pattern, things that you would have no clue about any other way. I was lucky and took sewing in home economics about 40 years ago, I did not sew since then until a few years ago but all the basics sort of came back to me. I also found that instead of buying a pattern and trying to figure out how to fit it to Lola, I bought an inexpensive harness dress from a gal on ETSY, I made a very simple pattern from that and it fits Lola perfect. good luck

| Brother Runway is what I have been learning on. About 14 months ago my husband bought a Brother Runway and showed me the basics. I had never used a sewing machine before that. Since then I have sewn so many different things. Here are some of the items I learned how to sew in that past year. I never took sewing lessons but watched and read a lot of tutorials online. http://www.pinterest.com/chrisl2013/chris-crafts/ I found this machine very easy to use too. Having just gotten my first YT, I am looking forward to trying my hand at some items that Mr. Beans would need. Keep us posted on what you decide on.
