I have the Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118. Its a good basic machine. It has a very easy learning curve and makes excellent quality stitches on a variety of fabrics. It doesnt have fancy stitches though.

You can buy cheaper singers that have more stitch style capabilities.

It depends what you want the machine to do and how picky you are about the results. My Mum and my Nan both have Berninas, which spoiled me when it comes to stitch quality. I don't sew enough to justify that price-point, but want a similar quatilty stitch, which is how I ended up with the Husqvarna.

Go to a store like JoAnn Fabrics. They will let you test various machines, so you can find one best for you. Sometimes little features you'll like better about one machine over another, like bobbin filling, reversing, threading. Little things, but you'll be doing them alot, so you want one your comfortable working with.
