| Another little question re puppy tangles Thought I'd ask on a seperate thread, the other having got so long. I've managed to locate a supplier over here of some of the products you recommended, but I'm not sure on this point. I've always been told not to bath a coat that has tangles in, so do I have to get them out before I bath her & can use the products in the bath? If so how do I get them out? It seems a bit of a chicken & egg situation, this first time, & I'm not sure how to tackle it. Be grateful for your advice. Meggie x |

| I just went through this and had to have Lily groomed to get them out!! The groomer told me to "always get the mats out before you get them wet'?? I just had her cut and she looks and feels alot better and so do I. I fought with her and brushed and put all kinds of stuff on her and finally gave up!!lol I figure it's hair and it will grow back. She looks cute actually!!lol Good luck!! |

I spray the coat lightly with a grooming spray, there are thousands to choose from, my favorite is Groom Aid. Work the mats out before wetting the coat. You can experiment with ways to do this but I use a pin brush, starting at the end of the coat and working back toward the skin. When I have a "pull" (strand of hair winds itself around other hairs and pulls) the pin brush will work ok. For matts I use a slicker brush, after spraying directly with grooming spray, I put my hand under the matt and work the slicker brush from the top with a circular motion until the matt loosens. Then I go back with the pin brush to work it out. If it's not a show coat you can use a "matt breaker" which is much faster but does more damage. Once you can brush the coat against the grain with your pin brush you are ready to bathe. Dilute the shampoo and rinse well, condition and rinse again. If you wish, you can dilute some conditioners and use them as grooming spray for daily brushing. If you are gentle and can convince your baby that you are not getting frustrated.....he will learn to enjoy the grooming and it will become much easier....I actually enjoy it most of the time.

| Thank you. You've explained that so clearly & it's a huge help A slicker brush is just about the only type I don't have, so must get one this week. |

| My boy went thru this phase too...which his breeders referred to as "puppy frizz." His puppy coat was coarse and fluffy so when the adult silk coat grew in it would matt with the puppy coat. Even as his hair grew long the ends would still tangle together. It was only when the puppy coat finally grew out and either broke or got cut off did his hair finally stop tangling at the ends. CC gave you excellent advice on getting the matts out. One of the products I used to keep in the hair to prevent it from rematting was Show Sheen. Its a product used for horses but it coats the hair with almost like a protective layer which really reduces the propensity to have it matt. The only down side is that it is a bit heavy. Good luck with your little one! |

Yes ALWAYS no matter WHAT dematt a Yorkie no matter what length s coat is before bathing....If not your in trouble you'll spend hours dematting after your Yorkies bath... I had to have my Teddy cut down to NOTHING and I mean NOTHING around his 1st birthday due to matting so badly under his belly and his legs...That is a bad bad place for matts to start at around 1 year of age has been on all 5 of my Yorkies...Make sure you turn them over on their backs to get those matts out under them...This is the best way I've found to get to them...Lay them in your lap and go at it....If they are not use to being on their backs then give them a little treat 1/2 through, let them up and run around and play...Then go back at it again. I've tried dematting while they are standing up and I can't do it. I use my fingers to get matts out I have a slicker brush but NEVER EVER use it...I tried to use it on Teddy when he was younger...Good luck...I can't use them maybe I don't know how??? But to me they would seem to break their coat??? And anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I just don't want to run the risk of breaking their coat any... I just spray the matt with Ice on Ice and use my fingers and a C&C Stainless Steal Comb to "GENTLY" comb it out ONCE the matt is apart...Never pull or tug at a matt... Never comb through one without something on it or Brush one without something on it....Also NEVER brush/comb a dry coat...Always mist it with some sort of water with conditioner added to it.... I then use plastic clippies (Ladies or girls) to hold their coat up and out of your way...(Make sure you don't get the clippies tangled up in their coat) (I use the little clippies to get their coat up out of my way on their legs so I can get to their paws) I start on one side from the paws up, legs, then tail, then sides, then back, then top between ears, then neck and front of chest and then face...All this is done while my Yorkies is standing and yep they get tired so I do one side at a time then let them go play for a few and potty...Then go on...You'll know when they are ready for a break! And I also give plenty of treats while doing this to let them know how good they are, we talk back and forth too lol. Then it's belly time...I lay them in my lap and I lay their coat over my legs and start at the bottom of their belly/sides (What I couldn't reach while they we're standing up)...Then it's bath time once all the matts are removed. I hope my way of doing my 5 Yorkies will help you in some way. Lee

| Thank you so much. You've all been really helpful I'm not sure if I can get all the recommended products over here, haven't tracked down Ice on Ice or Show Sheen yet, but I have just managed to get some Summerwinds Protect-A-Coat, which I saw recommended on another thread. Do you think any of these, which the supplier stocks, would be any help? It's a bit confusing what to buy..... I also lay them like this to trim their bellies and privates...They don't mind one bit lol...And to brush/comb them out. Hope it may help you some.
