| [News] Men Accused Of Stealing Yorkshire Terrier Puppies To Stand Trial LOS ANGELES -- Two men accused of posing as prospective buyers and then taking three Yorkshire terrier puppies and an adult dog at gunpoint from the owners' Wilshire-area home were ordered to stand trial Tuesday on multiple felony counts. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William N. Sterling ordered 23-year-old Troy Cabral and 19-year-old Ryan Jason Betton to be arraigned May 15 on nine felony counts, despite defense attorneys' assertions that the evidence against their clients was insufficient. "There isn't enough evidence for the court to determine if it was a real firearm," James P. Cooper III, who represents Cabral, told the judge. Sterling denied the motion to dismiss, contending that under the circumstances "a reasonable person would entertain a strong suspicion that it was a real gun." A surveillance camera inside the victims' home caught the assailants during the alleged home invasion robbery Feb. 23. One man can be seen wearing a white ball cap in a doorway and aiming what appears to be a gun as family members are on the floor. Another man scrambles around the living room for about 40 seconds as he tries to nab the four dogs -- one of which was especially elusive -- and then stashes them, one by one, in black plastic bags. A Los Angeles police detective identified Cabral as the man in the white cap, who is seen in a photograph taken by another surveillance camera outside the home, according to Deputy District Attorney Kenneth Loveman. "The IDs were pretty weak," Cooper said after the hearing. "And there's no evidence a real gun was used. The picture doesn't have the resolution to allow detectives ... (to identify the suspects). The faces aren't very clear." The gun has never been found, Loveman said. Cabral and Betton are both charged with four counts each of first-degree residential robbery and grand theft of a dog valued at more than $400, along with one count of first-degree burglary with a person present. Cabral is also facing a gun enhancement charging that he personally used a handgun during commission of the crime. The alleged victims were confronted at their home in the 200 block of North Manhattan Place by two men responding to an ad offering the puppies for sale at $2,500 each, authorities said. The puppies and the family's adult dog, Tan-ja, were recovered and reunited with the family. The dogs, Loveman said, "are fine as far as I know." The men remain free on $100,000 bail. http://www.nbc4.tv/news/13236485/detail.html

| Introducing Sukoshi... I'm new here, and this is my very first post to YorkieTalk...so let me start by saying "Hi" to all you Yorkie lovers out there! I got my Yorkie from the same breeder who was robbed at gunpoint in LA (read Black Widow's posting above), and the breeder and her family were such great people that I hope these guys get some sort of punishment for what they did! I'm not sure where they are getting the $2500 price for the puppies that I've seen quoted in all the newspaper stories I've read about this, since I have never seen any of her puppies listed for that much (or even close to it really...and mine is AKC registered, which I think normally costs a little more), but let's hope they have the rest of their facts right, and that they DO have enough evidence to get these guys for something. The breeder, Kelly, even sent me home with a bag of "goodies" for my new baby - including food, toys, treats, Nutri-Cal, potty pads, etc., which I thought was over and above what she had to do for us (is that typical to get a "goody bag" from the breeder?) They did NOT deserve to have something that frightening happen to them...even if they DID get the puppies back in the long run! Now...to introduce Sukoshi to you! This is the first puppy I've ever had AND my first Yorkie. Sukoshi (pronounced Sko-she, with a long o and long e) is really just a little skosh of a thing...weighing in at 3 pounds, 4 ounces at 8 months old. Her name is Japanese for "little". I brought her home on December 1, and she's definitely the love of my life (well...except for my husband, I guess ). Since I've never had a Yorkie or a puppy before (only older dogs rescued from the pound), I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun reading what you wiser, more experienced owners have to say out there. So...I look forward to "chatting" with you more in the future! |

Glad that you got your puppy, and oh so glad that they are prosecuting these guys. But, there is a lesson learned here. Advertising your yorkies in the Newspaper and/or internet, with your price, especially in a Metroplis like L.A. only puts ideas in the already criminal mind and makes you vulnerable to those criminals that are out for a fast buck.

| I don't get it... These guy turned themselves in, returned the puppies (except for one). Why do they get a trial? And so what if the gun was a fake or real? If the family thought it was a real gun then then it was real to them! How are they to know the difference? Armed robbery is armed robbery - PERIOD! Criminal behavior is just that, criminal! Who know what these guys would do next if they didn't get caught on video & identified? Thank goodness the victim's family installed that camera or else these guys could have gone on to more and more dangerous crimes and even hurt or murder someone! Go To Jail! Go to Jail! Go to Jail!

| How do you get the pictures on your name area? Hello all! I love seeing all the pictures of your beautiful yorkies! I would like to put some of the hundreds of (lol) pictures I have of Jasper but I don't know how to do it. Is there a spot that I can go to so that I can have a little slide show too. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Shirley |
