Help Me! What is this on Otis's Tail? I was digging through Otis's fur, and I noticed that the skin on his tail is peeling brown crunchy flakey skin all over. I also noticed he has some of that flakey brown stuff on his lower back/rump area, but none near his neck. I tried to brush it out, but it got worse and worse. What is it??? Is it old flea bites? I'm thinking that since he has none near his neck, and that's where I put the Advantage, maybe the fleas went and bit his rump instead. I should mention he is not scratching or chewing on himself. He seems perfectly normal. Please help! Last edited by Junebug; 06-13-2005 at 11:09 PM.

God bless the INTERNET. I couldn't stand not knowing what this stuff on his skin is, so after Googling all these skin symptoms for dogs, I think Otis might have a yeast infection. Otis had a yeast infection in his ear last year. The rashy thing on his tail/lower back looks like the same type of peeling sores as was in his ear, and his symptoms fit that of a yeast infection. I really hope it's not cancer or ringworm. I'm making an appointment w/ the vet first thing tomorrow. Has anyone else's dog had a yeast infection on the skin before? I'm a nervous wreck.

Sounds just like a yeast infection - nothing to panic about - our old Katie had it for a couple of months after she had taken antibiotics for a bladder infection. We couldn't get it to clear up till she had finished the antiobiotics but it didn't seem to worry her at all. The vet should be able to give you tablets and a wash to get rid of it.

We jsut got back from the vet. She said they were old flea bites. I cannot believe what a hissy fit I was having yesterday, and it turned out to be old flea bites. Anyway, to give me peace of mind, she gave us some medicated shampoo and some topical medicine. YAY! I'm happy again!

OMG, how many flea bites did he have? Glad the vet gave you med. shampoo. Maybe it is jock itch and one of those sprays will help. Okay, I apolgize but I could just see you chasing that poor baby with a can of Micoden(sp?) and saying"C'mon! Mommie wouldn't do anything that is bad for you!" My imagination is working overtime..Sorry...

kikko has this too! hey what kind of shampoo did you use? Kikko had the same kind of thing you described in his ear and rump! the ear has cleared up beautifully but hus butt has gotten better but hasn't cleared up ... so iunno currently we are using malaseb and topical cream, but its still there! our vet is baffled and we are trying new topical medicine this week....but its been there awhile now. so maybe i need to get my vet to give me a different shampoo ...
