| Deadly virus threatens area dogs! That is the headline in tonights paper. There is a picture of our Vet and Vet Tech on the front page. In part, it says that over the past two weeks my Vet has seen 11 cases of canine parvovirus in area dogs, two of which eventually died. Although he believes this represents a drastic rise in the infection rate, a common factor has been present in all the cases: The dogs have not been vaccinated against CPV. All 11 cases have been puppies. He said it is a 'hearty' virus that can survive for long periods of time and can be transmitted through contact with infected dogs and contaminated objects, such as play toys. The vaccine works very well and that is the key...to vaccinate. Some of the blame for the outbreak can be attriburted to pet owner's lack of education. Six weeks is not too young to have a puppy vaccinated, he said, stressing that treatment from sources other than a licensed veterinarian shoud be avoided. One of the dogs recently diagnosed with CPV had been vaccinated with products not administered by a veterinarian. "Some of them are the same as giving an injection of water," he said. You must be very careful where you get the vaccines. In addition to the heartache caused by the sickness or loss of a pet, CPV can also bring with it expensive treatments. Vaccines are considerably less. That was the jest of the article. I guess now they know exactly why my dogs are not allowed on the floor, the scales or the exam table unless I see for myself that they have been sterilized. They always accomodate me while the other patients owners just look at me like I'm nuts. I just don't take chances. Now I'm afraid to take them anywhere even though they have been vaccinated. Why does this have to happen at all!

| Oh boy do I feel your pain! My vet says parvo is particularly bad in our area this year also.

| This is a good reason to keep your puppies inside and if you do go anywhere, never let them walk in stores or street till they have had their parvo shots. I had a dog one time that had even had her yearly parvo booster and still got a dose of that disease. Parvo is a horrible disease, so please get those babies their shots and keep them protected for a long time. |

| Parvo is so alive in our area, the vet staff and I have come up with these safety steps for my puppies and we all agree it's best for their protection. Whenever I take new puppies to our vet....no one on staff is allowed to touch them until they wash their hands and I ask the vet and tech to put on clean coats to handle them. The puppies do not get on common area's (floors, floor scale, outside yards) until a month after they have had their last shots & I take my own coverings (disposable) for the exam tables. We had an appt one day at our vet and they had a person bring in a parvo infected puppy for treatment (the pup died). The people that had treated the pup scrubbed and changed clothing and the office was closed for cleaning, appointments were changed and emergencies were sent to another vet. That's how frightening Parvo is here.

| Thanks!!!!!!! janet thanks for posting this. Indiana is too close to ky for comfort. i got up right when i read it and vaccinated my two six and a half week old babies. i was trying to wait until eight weeks since a couple of very knowledgable people on here say the latest thing is to wait till eight weeks. it is just too scary and I have always given them at six weeks before. What is happening is breeders and people that are giving their own shots are getting the cheaper medication that doesn't have the Cvk in it. i have had people say why do you pay what you do. Well, this is why. i have looked at vaccines and the ones that are twenty five vaccines for usually around 58-60 dollars don't have the CVk. i pay anywhere from 100 to 110 for mine because I always get the one with the cvk. no lepto tho. So i would advise people to get the five way with the coronavirus killed bacteria added. |

No, it's not a press release believe me, he wouldn't do that. He is so busy now and is expanding. Not only is he expanding the building with more exam rooms, another surgical room, quarantine rooms, dog runs, he's also adding another full-time and part-time Vet to help keep up with the patients.
