| Question about heart guard meds I keep both my babies on this year around, and purchase it though my vet. Every year on checkup time, they still want to do heartworm tests. Now if I get it through them, and never miss doses, why would they need the test done each year. Stumped here. |

| Good question, Ellie's vet is the exact same way. She said it is because if they throw it up somewhere and you never knew then they could get heartworm. Well, my question for her is (haven't had the guts to ask though she's too nice and not the owner of the practice) if you are worried about them throwing it up then why wouldn't you test once a month.

| Hmmmm, I have Mojo and Lily on Interceptor because that is what our vet recommended for them. I don't recall them doing a test each year for it though, I wonder why some vets do that?

| Seems mine get the test when they go in for a yearly checkup. Its thrown in the bill with the rest of the stuff. Just wondering if anyone else wonders why, or their pets get the test. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | The last general practice i worked for would test every two years if they were kept on heart worm meds year round. if its seasonal they will do it every year.

| I wondered the samething so I did ask awhile ago. I was told that nothing is 100%. The same goes for the lymes shot. These are preventive medications and their chances are better not getting something than if they were not taking the meds. Still a slim chance they can get what they are getting meds for I was told |

| If you stop for the winter or miss a pill somewhere, you need to have a test done before restarting.... and be sure it comes back negative. Giving a heartworm positive dog a pill can cause problems. At my vet, if you keep them on it all year round you can do a heartworm test every other year. |

| I recently took Lacy to her new vet and asked the same thing. She's been on heartguard every month since 3 months old. First of all, in Texas the vet you're using can't sell Heartworm preventative unless they have a negative heartworm test on file for your dog. I'm sure you can find some vets that will but most won't. If your dog does happen to have heartworms and you give them the preventative, you can kill your dog. Also they told me nothing is 100% effective. Heartguard guarantees it's product if you are on it every month and have a heartworm test once a year. If for some reason your dog does contract heartworms, the company will pay for the treatment. Really it's better to be safe than sorry...

| You don't want to give only half of the heartguard because the medicine is injected into that meaty chew. It may not be evenly distributed in it. What if the medicine they injected only ended up in one side of it? One month you're giving the half with all the medicine and one month you're giving the side with none. It's best to just give them the whole chew. It's not like pills that can be halved and all
