| BEWARE!! w/ new pups GIARDIA!!! Please make sure that your new pup/old pup has been given shots for Giardia. Our beautiful new pup who we are soooooo in LOVE with is in the doggie hospital. We are not sure that he will make it and it is so upsetting. Our story: We got our little guy last Friday night. He was acting fine until Monday night when all of a sudden he had horrible diarrhea and was vomiting. We took him to the vet Tuesday morning and they didn't have any idea what was wrong with him but they gave him the usual antibiotics. It wasn't helping. We then received an urgent call from the breeder Thursday begging us to call back ASAP. It turns out that all of her dogs were coming back to her because they had "what is called Giardia" and that Mason (our little guy) needs to be treated right away. So we went back to the vet Thursday and got him on Panacur (SP) but was still not making any progress. So Friday we took him back to the breeder in hopes that she could help him. It turns out that 3 pups have already died and our pup is in intensive care at the hospital. We are traveling 2 hours tonight to go see him and cheer him on! I just wanted to write this story so that people would know before it is too late to get your doggie treaded for Giardia!! I hope Mason recovers. We love him so much already! |

| That's horrible news!!! Is the breeder going to take responsibility for this?? I hope so! I'm so sorry to hear that about your Mason! I hope he will be okay (he's probably a strong little guy)! Fred and I will keep him in our prayers.. and please keep us updated and thank you for the warning! Have a safe drive and remember to let us in on how he's doing! |

| We visited the hospital and it was heartbreaking. His little leg was shaved and he had an IV in. He still isn't playful but he is alert and aware of his surroundings whereas two days ago he wasn't. He is such a little trooper. We are really rooting for this guy! The doctor said that she is "cautiously optimistic," so we will take that as good news. She also said that Mason still has a slightly fever but his sugar levels are good. This vet hospital is the real deal. It isn't cheap and I am guessing that this is costing the breeder a couple thousand dollars if not more. My only hope is that if Mason goes back to the breeder in a day or so and isn't getting any better, I just hope the breeder will take him back to the hospital and not give up. Sounds awful, but it worries me. So far the breeder has been great. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...5/f420541a.jpg Last edited by MasonTamrin; 05-14-2005 at 05:06 AM. |

| My puppy had that. luckily I caught it fast and rushed him to the vet. He had a $185 vet bill but worth it. He had to take a pill twice a day for 7 days. he is a lot better now nad as hyper as ever. He also had to get an IV. I am praying for you and your little guy.

| We have GREAT NEWS!! Mason will be coming home from the hospital tomorrow! He seems to be eating again and the puppy in him is finally coming back. My only worry is that he continues to get better. We are not 100% out of the woods. Thank you all for your kind words. But most importantly, please get your pups vaccinated against this virus! |

| Poor little guy!!! What a tramua for him! Sounds like you have a responsible breeder, good for you!!! Do you know if Giardia is a seperate shot or is it covered in the usual shots? Do you have to ask for it?

| Is Giardia a threat everwhere or just certain parts of the country? How do they get it? I am so happy for you and Mason that it appears as though he will make a full recovery. It would be nce to acknowledge your breeder on here too for doing the right thing. We always need good breeder and she sounds like she really cares. |

| Giardia comes from water from my understanding. I thought you had to drink infected water to get it. One year while in the mountains, we were warned to not drink any mountain stream water because it was testing positive for Giardia.

| Giardia comes from drinking stale water. Either run off from a farm or water that has pocketed itself in the yard. It can also come from a dog licking another dogs behind or poop. The shots for Giardia are not a part of the usual shots. You do need to ask for it and it does not protect the dog from the illness, but it does drastically reduce the affect that the virus has on the dog. I would recommend getting your doggies vaccinated. Our breeder has been wonderful so far. I am cautious to give the breeder recognition because we are not out of the woods just yet. |

| Quick follow up: Mason is home and doing great! Our breeder whom I HIGHLY recommend is TOPKNOTCHYORKIES.com who are located about 20 minutes from Atlantic City in New Jersey. Reasons: -The breeder accepts FULL responsibility for any sick dogs. -They requested Mason back when he was sick ASAP and put him in a doggie hospital for 3 days until he was fully recovered. -They reimbursed us for every vet bill, no questions asked. -1 dog died who was already given a home and now this person gets first pick of the litter no matter how cute and small the yorkie may be. -Her home is well suited to handle yorkie pups! -Finally, she treats all pups exceptionally well! |

| I am glad that Mason is better! It sounds like you were very fortunate with your breeder! My Rocky just recovered from parvo, so I know how horrible this was for you! Good luck with your baby! |
