| Need advice about a minor puppy hernia Hi everyone, I am very new to the forum. I am in the process of bringing my girl yorkie home--next friday the 15th. She will be 12 weeks old this Sunday the 10th. I just spoke to the breeder, who had the puppy taken for a checkup today. She said that the vet found two minor hernias, I think in the lower abdomen/groin area. She said the vet said that some vets would take care of this now, but that he would wait and see, as they may go away on their own, and they can be treated when she is spayed. Does anyone have any advice? Will this be expensive, and should I renegotiate the price we had agreed upon? Thanks for any advice!! Erin |

| Usually it is done when the pup gets spayed/neutered. I don't believe it costs much more if done at that time. A vet told me to gently push in at the hernia site twice a day which may help it heal on it's own. One of my girls had a small hernia and it took care of itself before she got spayed. good luck! omega |

I got her when she was two, and done having pups. The vet said she should be fine, as she is not lifting anything heavy like weights, lol, but to keep an eye on it. So far, nothing has changed, but I do need to keep an eye on it. My vet said it is a simple operations. Right, but the anesthesia is what I dislike. Pls. let us know what happens. Kate

| We had a pup from Sunnie's January litter that had a small hernia show up at 8 wks. We took her to the vet right away and she showed me how to apply pressure to it and pop it back in. We made the appt to have it repaired at 12 wks and when I took her for the surgery to repair it the vet called and said "no surgery today" it had healed itself. He told me that he couldn't even make it herniate. We were told to have checked when she was spayed. We gave her to good friends of ours and 6 wks ago when she was spayed there was no sign of it. I suppose each one is different but it's shocking to see a belly bump on such a small baby.

| If I would have had the surgery at 12 wks they said it would have been less than $250.

| hernia Many hernia's recede by 6 months...if not they can be repaired at spaying time..I always agreed to pay for the hernia repair if it was not gone by spaying time...only fair. PS..my vet never charged more then $50 if done when spaying.. |

| I spay/neuter before the puppies leave here and if I would have a hernia I would do it at the same time. If these are in fact very small the puppy probably will be just fine, but I have known of puppies that the hernia strangulated and they died, so if the breeder will not agree to spay/neuter before the puppy leaves, I would take her immediately to your vet for his opinion on whether the thinks they will be ok until he alters the puppy. Good luck.
