| Feeding question I feed my dogs once a day in the evening. I've done this for quite awhile but this past week I've found Alphy up in Abby's bowl licking it clean like he's hungry. Day before yesterday they both saved some food for later that evening and/or the morning. Yesterday Alphy again was licking the bowls clean, so I gave them each handful of food for a morning snack. Abby is 65-70lbs and Alphy is 9lbs. I feed the Dick VanPatten food and use the measurements recommended for feeding (at least I think I am). Anyway Alphy gets a cup and Abby gets 3 cups. Do you guys think I'm not feeding enough? Or what? Maybe this week they've just been a bit hungrier then normal. What would you suggest to do? I've thought about increasing food, but now that it's wet in the mornings and the kids have sports in the evenings, we don't get as much exercise.

My furkids Donating Member | IMO...once a day is NOT enough...I would feed in the morning and in the evening. Just think if you only ate once a day how hungry you would be. (I don't mean this to sound snotty...)

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | You should feed them twice a day. Look on the back of your dog food package; it tells you how much you should feed them per day depending on their weight. Divide the amount and give it to them half in the morning and half in the afternoon. You can always add a few healthy snacks during the day! |

| Could you split the amount in half? Give half in the morning and half at night.

No snotty taken. Part of me agrees, but I've read so much on feeding dogs just once a day. ???? I think it's all a personal preference really, but I'm going to try the morning and evening thing. Thanks.

| I was told a long time ago that a dog's digestive system is lots slower than a human's so we can't compare how they eat to our own habits. Most of the dogs I have had have eaten once a day. A couple of them preferred twice a day and one liked to nibble throughout the day. Adie (19 weeks old) phased out her third feeding and is down to twice a day. Since she is so tiny I will keep feeding her twice but a lot of the time it is a struggle. She just doesn't have a lot of interest in dog food. |

| I leave a bowl of food out at all time for my puppy. The vet told me that's what she recommended as the little guys can become hypoglycemic so easily. He's only 17 weeks and only weighs 2.3 pounds. Should I be doing something different... like feeding 2-3 times/day?
