Worried once again! I know you are probably all getting sick of hearing about my worries over Maddie, but here goes again. She was spayed on Tuesday...all went well. She has eaten well, drank, and going to the bathroom fine. She seemed fine the day after surgery and was hard to keep her quiet. Last evening she started whimpering and acting as if she was in pain and would start to pant, so I'd take her to her water dish but she didn't want to drink. I finally figured out she was doing the Lamaze thing for pain. She slept a lot and seemed better this morning. Late this afternoon, my daughter stopped and I was holding Maddie and she noticed stains on the onesie I had on Maddie to keep her from licking her incision. We looked at her incision and it was oozing at one end and appeared a bit red and swollen. The discharge is a light bloody color. I immediately called the vet and talked to the, I assume, one of the receptionists. I told her what was happening and she told me to use hydrogen peroxide on it and then put neosporin on it. I've been putting neopsporin on it since she got home because I was told to do that. It is still oozing and I wouldn't be so worried, except that Maddie has done nothing but lay...she isn't always sleeping...her eyes are open a lot, but she just lays there and a lot of time lays on her back. I decided that I'm not calling the vet in the morning, but just taking her there and telling them I want her checked out, but I don't think I can wait till morning...she just isn't herself at all. Has anyone here had any experience with problems after spaying?

I have no experience with spaying, but I can understand your worry over Maddie! It does sound like there's an infection and it's getting poor Maddie down. Does she feel warmer than normal? If she had a definite temp, I would take her ASAP. Otherwise, morning should be fine. I am not a vet, nor do I play one on TV I hope Maddie is 100% better soon

Thank you, Jennifer. I called the vet on call and she isn't my regular vet, but I do think very highly of her. She said that if Maddie is eating, it shouldn't be anything life threatening and to bring her in in the morning and have her checked. Just before calling the vet, I had taken Maddie outside to go potty and when I brought her back in, she started scratching the carpet, pillow...just like she was digging and digging for something...then she'd roll around and scratch some more and then rub her body against the wall or couch...like she was wild and I haven't figured that out...unless she was itchy and didn't know where to scratch. After doing that for a couple of minutes, she layed down again and went to sleep. Then, after calling the vet, my daughter and grandkids and their two dogs stopped by and Maddie kind of came to life. I didn't let her get rough with the puppies, but she sure was glad to see them. I'm now wondering if she is probably depressed because she is used to seeing them often and hasn't seen them since her surgery. Once they left, she sprawled out on the pillow and has been there since. She is just not herself at all! I will let you know how things go tomorrow at the vet. Thanks again!

That behavior just doesn't sound right. I have had only one bad spay experience but once she was properly fixed, she was up bouncing around. I would insist that she be seen immediately. I have helped my vet many times but haven't encountered any females that behaved like that. I hope all is well and would like to know how things come out. lily's mom

I took Maddie to the vet this morning. My vet was off today so she was seen by the vet I talked with last night. She does have an infection in her incision and got antibiotics for that. The vet cannot figure out her strange behavior of digging...she did it again this morning after I took her out to go potty. She came in and started scratching and digging anything she could...the carpet, her doggie bed, a pillow, her blanket. It's like she goes wild for a while and is bound and determined to dig a hole. Maybe it is her way of dealing with being under the weather. Anyway, I feel better now that she's been seen by the vet and has medicine. Thanks all!!! Have yourselves a great weekend!

My female Myra digs and scratches the floor with her paws and with her back legs and runs around like you have mentioned every time she goes poop. she runs around like someone is chasing her, but I think it's her way of telling me she went poop. So if I'm in the other room and she comes running in where I am, and she's doing the poop dance I call it, I know she's telling me she went, so when this happens I go in and there it is she did her thing. It is kind of cute when she dances around to let me know.

Ringo digs and scratches every night before he goes to sleep. He thinks he's making a bed/nest.

My Chewy does the digging thing...we call it ""digging to China. She does it vigorously, and then lays down. It's just like someone else said, they are making a nest.
