| Scabs! Hello! I took my Yorkie for grooming a couples of weeks ago (June 4). Later that evening we went out of town for the night (he's been there before). A couple of days later I noticed he was starting to itch a lot and scabs started to form. So, I took him to the vet on June 10, I believe. I was told to give him baby benadryl and bathe him in a shampoo that the vet prescribed. I followed directions, BUT the scabs have gotten WAY WORSE!!! I called the vet and she said try the shampoo again for this week. Has this ever happened to anyone's fur baby? |

| Yes, this happened to my Teddy recently. He had a reaction to a possible sting from a hornet and a reaction to a shampoo that we used for the first time. The reaction caused a bunch of hives on the back end of his body. A few scabbed over. The scabs came off and his skin was perfect underneath. As long as your baby is not developing new spots, and as long as the scabbed areas do not look infected, your pup is likely on the road to recovery. Have your groomer stick to shampoo and other products that you know do not cause a reaction.

| I thought maybe it could have been something new that the groomer used, but not 100% sure. Then, thought maybe fleas, but the vet didn't say anything about that and he's on trifexis. The scabs don't look infected, but he has them all over! Worse than when he went to the vet, but she didn't seem to be too worried about it.. |

| I would be nervous too if the scabs are all over and numerous. Teddy is highly allergic to fleas, but has never had scabbing with a flea bite. Watch for any throat or facial swelling, which can come with an allergic reaction and cause trouble breathing. If that happens, ER or immediate vet attention is needed. Is your pup still scratching? If the spots continue to multiply and/or your pup is scratching, he might need a round of a steroid like prednisone. I would insist on the vet examining my dog again. If she still seems resistant, might be time for a second opinion. Some vets are better with skin issues than others.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | How old is he...? If an adult w/ scabs all over, I'd be concerned that it's pyoderma (staph intermedius overgrowth in dogs, causing infection all over). To treat it, vets prescribe Simplicef x 30 days. It will not go away on its own...
